Rediscovering Leadership: Lessons from a 10-Month Sabbatical
Rich Simmons
Vice President of Product Management | Product Strategy, Innovation Innovative Leader in Product Strategy and Organizational Success
After more than 20 years as a senior leader in the technology industry, I made an unconventional decision: to step away from the corporate world and embark on a 10-month sabbatical. This journey wasn’t just about taking a break—it was an intentional choice to recharge, learn, and grow.
What I gained from this experience has not only enriched me personally but has also deepened my perspective on leadership, innovation, and culture. As I re-enter the corporate world, I feel more equipped than ever to tackle challenges, inspire teams, and drive meaningful change.
Embracing New Cultures
During my travels, I immersed myself in diverse cultures across multiple continents. I had the privilege of experiencing different ways of living, working, and connecting.
These experiences reinforced the importance of adaptability—a key trait for any leader. I learned how people in different cultures approach problem-solving, decision-making, and collaboration. This broadened perspective has given me a richer understanding of how to foster inclusive and dynamic teams in a globalized world.
The Power of Stepping Back
Stepping away from the day-to-day grind allowed me to reflect deeply on what makes a great leader. I had time to analyze my past experiences, celebrate successes, and identify areas for improvement.
I’ve come to appreciate the value of stillness in a world that often demands constant motion. This renewed mindfulness has strengthened my ability to focus, listen actively, and make thoughtful decisions—qualities I believe are essential in guiding teams and organizations toward success.

New Experiences, New Insights
From traveling to countries in which I did not speak the language, to creating new art (as seen in the beginning of this article), to learning to mold molten lava into works of art, I pushed myself beyond my comfort zone. These adventures taught me resilience, resourcefulness, and the power of curiosity. I was reminded that true growth often happens when we embrace uncertainty and challenge ourselves in new ways.
These lessons are directly applicable to the corporate world. As technology continues to evolve rapidly, the ability to pivot, innovate, and remain open to new ideas is more critical than ever.
A Stronger, More Empowered Leader
As I look to the next chapter in my career, I do so with a renewed sense of purpose and a fresh perspective. My sabbatical was not a pause—it was a recalibration. It has enhanced my ability to lead with empathy, think strategically, and foster environments where people and ideas can thrive.
To the companies and leaders I will work with next: I bring not only two decades of experience in the technology sector but also the insights and adaptability gained from this transformational journey. I’m excited to leverage this unique blend of skills to drive innovation and create meaningful impact.
The Next Chapter Awaits
If you’ve ever considered stepping away to reset and rediscover your purpose, I encourage you to take that leap. It’s not always easy, but the rewards are immeasurable. For me, this sabbatical was not an end but a beginning—a launching pad for even greater contributions as a leader and innovator.
I’d love to connect with others who have taken similar journeys or who are curious about the value of stepping back to move forward. Let’s learn from each other and continue to grow as leaders in this ever-evolving world.

2 个月That is a great read and very insightful. I didn't yet had the opportunity to take a proper sabbatical but I did spend one month in a rental apartment in Germany last year which gave me some opportunity to live and observe many cultural and economic differences. And of course I was able to visit many beautiful small towns and realize my dream of visiting the astronomical clock in Strassbourg. This year I also spent a couple of months in my native Brazil. I consider myself fortunate because my current engagement allows me to work at any time from anywhere which also gave me some perspective if I decide to move/retire abroad and that is becoming more and more the preferred option given the economic turmoil we are experiencing here with layoffs and plain lack of hiring. The dollar still goes a long way in Brazil for example and I would have much better access to healthcare (which is necessary at my age). With the current work culture here of taking at most two weeks vacation people are missing a great opportunity to reset and realign. And when they get laid off the shock is even more severe. People should take time to enjoy while they are healthy to do so.

2 个月Rich I was fortunate enough to be able to do this twice in my professional career. It’s alway beneficial to recharge, grow and evaluate our leadership abilities and style, and adjusting as necessary in an ever changing world. But expect push back at times on your new found experience, as old corporate ways are sometimes difficult to change in a new environment. However, I’m confident you can pull it off! Best of luck. And welcome back to the corporate world.
What an enlightening read, thank you for sharing Rich. I've been wondering how you were doing, and it's nice to see these refreshing words.
