Mid-life is an interesting stage to be in. You have many years of life and leadership experience behind you, at the same time, you have many years ahead.
How can you ensure you are still on the right track in your life and career?
The problem is that sometimes different areas in our lives decline, without us even realizing it. For example, you have less time to go to the gym due to long working hours. Or because of your new leadership role, you became busier and have less time to nurture your close relationships.
When an area of your life declines, it impacts your mental, emotional and spiritual health which affects your well-being.
It′s almost as if the body goes out of balance. I call this the gap between your Suit and your Monk, your external and internal self.
And the problem is that most of us don′t realize these gaps because they happen unconsciously. And one day you wake up and realize you have a belly, more wrinkles, a more stressful life on the way to burnout and struggles in your relationship.
A midlife review helps you reflect on your current state where you are in life and the next steps you need to take moving forward to experience more internal balance. It provides insight into which areas of your life need attention right now so you can experience more internal alignment.
A midlife review helps you to get perspective on areas such as:
?? Your finances
?? Your goals
?? Your relationships
?? Your health
?? Your spiritual growth
?? Your passions and hobbies
领英推荐
?? Your career aspirations
?? ….
You can give each of these areas a score from 1-10. 1 being not fulfilled and 10 being optimal, and then see how you can increase your number.
Let′s say your health today is a 5 because you have not been working out. Then the question is how do you improve your health and go from a 5 to a 7? What does that look like? Then you brainstorm. For example, you buy organic foods from the farm, you reduce sugars and sweets, you exercise more, you hire a personal trainer etc… anything that helps you to get back on track with your desired state.
You can do this for each of the areas above and see how you can improve each area.
Awareness is the key to change and this simple exercise can help with that.
One final note on this, what you will find is that throughout your life and leadership journey, your review and numbers constantly change.
If you make a career change and work for a different company, suddenly the gym is no longer near the office so you need to find a different gym. But maybe the factory is far away and there is no gym nearby, so you need to constantly re-adjust when major life changes happen.
And so it′s important to continuously keep re-investing in the different areas in your life that are important for you and keep expanding your awareness. This will allow you to be the best version of yourself and to stay on the right track in your life and career.
