Redefining Success: Your Journey to Freedom and Fulfillment
Does this resonate with you?
You are an overachiever and have been since as far as you remember - A straight-A student, you were motivated more by the desire for success and achievement than by the fear of failing.?
And so after college, you chose the obvious path of finance, of sales and marketing or consulting.? And now after years of working insane hours, you are finding yourself wondering whether it was really a choice, why you are not getting the positive feedback and validation you have earned so many times over, and comparing your now to your peers’ = you feel stuck.
“Should I stay or should I go” is a legit way out! but before you start the process of looking for a better and greener place, I would encourage you to start with a change of perspective: how do you define success and how to feel proud of what you do and are?
What does success truly mean to you?
Begin by asking yourself, what does success really mean to me? Is it the high-flying job, the impressive title, or is there more to it? For many, true success might mean having the freedom to pursue projects they are passionate about. For others, it might involve making a significant impact in their community or industry.?
Take a moment to reflect on past times when you felt genuinely successful. What were you doing? How did it make you feel?
Value your unique career and personal path
It's easy to fall into the trap of comparing your journey with those of your peers, especially in competitive fields of fast and furious industries. However, everyone's path is unique, and so are the challenges and victories along the way.?
Focus on what you have accomplished and how you have grown over the years. This isn't about tallying up achievements, but about recognizing the resilience, creativity, and determination that have driven your journey so far.

Embrace a broader vision of success
Once you have a clearer understanding of what success means to you personally, start incorporating this new definition into your career strategy. Maybe it means seeking roles that offer more freedom or leadership opportunities that align with your values. Perhaps it’s about advocating for changes within your current organization that can lead to a healthier work environment for you and your colleagues.
Find fulfillment in feeling challenged and achieved
A key component of feeling successful is the sense of continuous growth and development. Look for ways to expand your skills and knowledge base. This could be through formal education, like workshops and seminars, or through more informal routes like mentorships or reading widely. The goal is to stay intellectually engaged and challenged, which can lead to deeper job satisfaction and a renewed sense of purpose.
Build a support network
Success is rarely a solo journey. Surround yourself with mentors, peers, and friends who not only support you but challenge you to grow and think differently. These relationships can provide you with new perspectives, advice, and encouragement, which are invaluable during times of uncertainty or transition.
Finally, create your own metrics of success
Establish personal metrics for success based on your revised definition. These shouldn't just be tied to traditional markers like salary increases or job titles, but also to how aligned your work is with your personal values, your feelings of accomplishment and growth, and your overall well-being and happiness.
In redefining success, you empower yourself to pursue a career path that truly brings satisfaction and fulfillment. It’s about changing the narrative from what the world sees as successful to what makes you feel genuinely proud and fulfilled. Embrace this journey of self-discovery, and let your definition of success evolve as you continue to learn, grow, and thrive in your personal and professional life.
