In this edition of ReThink, we dive deep into the often-paralyzing fear of public speaking, a fear deeply intertwined with the fear of rejection. Together, we'll explore how this fear manifests, its roots, and most importantly, strategies to conquer it. Join me as we confront this fear head-on and discover the transformative power of embracing rejection as a catalyst for growth and empowerment.
Understanding the Impact of Rejection
Experiencing rejection, or the fear of it, can be a profoundly impactful social trigger — particularly in the workplace.
Imagine walking into a meeting and find colleagues already engaged in discussions, seemingly excluding you. Despite your attempts to join in, you're met with indifference or dismissal. As you sit in the corner, feelings of exclusion and inadequacy begin to take hold.
Your brain's neurochemistry shifts, flooding your system with cortisol and triggering a sense of threat. This physiological response alters your perception of reality: you reveal less, expect more, assume the worst, and yearn for inclusion. This cycle of rejection can hinder productivity, innovation, and collaboration, as it undermines trust and fosters a climate of fear and uncertainty.
Coachee Story: Confronting the Fear of Public Speaking
Let me introduce you to Sarah, a remarkable marketing executive whose brilliance is overshadowed by her fear of public speaking. Despite her expertise and track record of success, Sarah's mind raced with doubts and fears when faced with the prospect of presenting her groundbreaking ideas. The fear of stumbling over her words or failing to articulate her ideas effectively loomed large, causing her to decline the opportunity and pass it on to a colleague. Similarly, when invited to speak at industry conferences and networking events, Sarah's fear of rejection led her to decline, missing out on valuable opportunities to showcase her expertise and expand her professional network.
In coaching, we went deep into the origins of her anxiety, uncovering the moments in her past where she felt dismissed or undervalued. Together, we embarked on a journey to build Sarah's confidence and resilience.
We implemented strategies rooted in habit-building, leveraging techniques like visualization and mindfulness to reshape her thought patterns. Sarah began practicing her speeches in front of smaller, supportive audiences, gradually expanding her comfort zone.
As she progressed through our MTS Speaking Habit Building Process?, partnering with a buddy for six weeks, Sarah found her confidence growing in the safe space provided for learning and feedback.
Just last night, two members of our current cohort were raving about this process, highlighting the valuable feedback they've been receiving and how it's helping them overcome their fear of public speaking.
Reframing Rejection: Telling a Better Story
Rejection is a story, a very disempowering story. But we always have the power to tell a better story.
Instead of viewing rejection as a reflection of our worth or capabilities, we can choose to see it as a stepping stone to growth and self-discovery. Avoiding risk altogether may seem appealing, but it deprives us of the potential for growth, success, and fulfillment. While taking risks inevitably opens us up to the possibility of failure, it also presents opportunities for tremendous growth, joy, and meaning.

6 个月There is the saying "the opposite of love is not hate - it is indifference" . Walking into a room with "colleagues" who don't even notice your entrance, is a clear sign of exclusion. Everybody experiences some level of insecurity when entering a new space - the question that we all need to ask ourselves is "do I want to belong there?". If the answer is "yes" or "maybe" - finding a coach who will help in navigating that journey is a way to go. #belongingmatters ?? Thank you for reminding, Shivangi Walke
