Redefining Quality Engineering, Software testing Career – Prepare yourself for the Digital Future

Leading Industry analysts predict that the software testing world to grow by 5% YoY and estimated spend to be around 200 BN in the areas of software, embedded services testing. Lots of organization have gone through their budget cuts during this pandemic stages and considerable amount of software testing professionals have put their profile for outreach “Open to work” – Thanks to linkedin. The situation is will eventually get into a controlled state as soon as vaccine news to come and 2021 is going to be a new year of future. As many say, this pandemic has transformed many organizations to Digital way faster than their roadmap to go digital.

Industries will adopt Cloud, Hyper automation, RPA, IOT, 5G and several other next generation technology spectrums to invest in the next 3 years for their application transformation. Many products that are used to be legacy technologies have been transformed their technology stack into cloud solutions and application will be available in On Demand platform. To name a few - Oracle, SAP, ERP applications and domain products such as Temenos, Guidewire etc. It’s the market for Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud, Amazon EC2 and this will be largely consumed to get achieve organization goals to be full digital.

The next generation areas that software testing professionals have to upskill to meet the Digital reality and enable themselves valuable to the DevOps/Agile world. Quality Engineering, Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET), Digital Assurance Engineer, Full Stack QE architect, Performance Test architect are those going to be the prime skills of adoption in the Digital, DevOps, agile world of IT transformation. Certifications such as SAFe, Agile certification for QA would largely help in understanding the process and technology concepts. Continuous testing is going to be the future in parallel to the Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery side of the DevOps world.

Automation tools are also transforming their focus and leaders such as Tricentis, UI path have taken the position as leaders and Selenium continue to dominate the open source tools spectrum. Quality Engineering professional should start themselves to certify in these tools. These new technology of automation tools provide Scriptless framework, and some are in the hosted solutions for the automation lab models. This brings in a higher coverage of automation and faster release lifecycle.

Containerization, Orchestration, DevOps are some of the key transformation levers and organization would utilize full stack Quality engineers to understand these terminologies, their products for an integrated delivery environment.

TaaS, Crowd Testing, Consumer experience testing, User experience automation testing, TDD/BDD, Infrastructure testing, Operation readiness testing, Test data management/Test environment management will have a higher adoption for service providers to enable their teams to gain awareness, skill/workforce transformation to meet the market needs. There will be certain degree of decline in the way manual testing is being performed, regression testing, mobile testing in manual ways.

Needless to explain the industry/domain capabilities will be the key packaged with the technology experience. Healthcare, Medical devices, Retail – Digital commerce, Banking, Insurance, Manufacturing, Education industries will diversify their technology adoption into transforming Digital ways and adopt higher degree of business process automation. RPA, Hyper automation is another skill sets that Quality Assurance/Engineer professionals should train and achieve certification as they are well equipped to handle business process validation, automation on the technology side. It’s an add-on skill sets to gain the operations/business process side of the automation. Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Analytics will become mainstream and acquiring these skills along with your automation experience will strengthen the value of Quality engineering. More tools have come following these principles in their IP and utilized historical data and have come up with predictive analytics algorithm.
