Redefining the next few years
We all know that COVID-19 is going to cause a lot of damage. How much none of us really knows. Post-2020, I believe that we will end up with fundamental changes to our society that will be very positive.
Today, because of social distancing, some of my friends who never cooked have started baking bread. We are all looking at charts and predictions based on aggregate and extrapolated data. My kids have quickly moved to online classes while most of the world does not even have access to online. The inequality in access and wealth is showing in India with the migrant workers that are suffering the most.
My intentions were to write this down and share so we can revisit a year from now:
- Work will become asynchronous. With tools and rituals that allow for more communications and documentation, we will meet less to be more productive doing remote work.
- I do think we will pay attention to the quality of time we spend with people we care about the most. Opposite to work, being with friends and family will become more synchronous.
- Online learning will scale along with nonlinear and contextual education. Ultimately education and information will be accessible by many
- Global supply chains will slowly reduce to minimal becoming much more local. This should result in less stress on our environment and more self-reliance in times like this.
- Universal basic income and access to medicine will become a reality in many parts of the world.
- We will suddenly become ok with being tracked and giving control to the state. The collective harnessing of big data by non-private entities will help communities.
- Local tourism and spending more time in our parks and backyards will continue beyond this lockdown period. We should see more usage of urban gardens, picnics, and staycations.
- Patriotism has taken on a new turn where the enemy is not another state or religion. At least in the US, politicians across the aisle will learn to collaborate in new ways.
- Online commerce moves quickly to headless commerce. The brand (Amazon, Target Costco..) that does last-mile delivery becomes less critical. Access, quality of product and customer service will become more important.
Any other thoughts of positive outcomes we can look forward to?

4 年Well captured Pree, I am quite optimistic about good things to emerge from this worst case scenario... to add to the list, many will learn to cook, there will be less divorces and and hopefully, more people will get pets :)
