Redefining math in today's world

A unique occasion, Pi day celebrates the mathematical constant π (Pi). On this day we can reflect on how we perceive Mathematics, logical reasoning and critical thinking in our everyday lives. Coincidentally, Albert Einstein, perhaps the most renowned physicist in the world was born on the same day. Although remembered best for his contributions to Physics, Einstein’s words “Pure Mathematics is, in its way, the poetry of logical ideas.” reflect his love of Math.

Referred to as ‘La Lingua Pura’ (pure language) in many ancient cultures, Mathematics, the process of using rational, systematic steps, based on procedure, to arrive at a conclusion about a problem, requires logical and critical thinking. No longer viewed as a language, the subject is seen as esoteric and even burdensome by many. Perceived as a technical subject based on concepts and calculations, the fact that we use Math every single day often escapes us. Even as we cross the street doing quick mental assessments about speed, distance and time needed to reach the other side or cook recipes using measurements of ingredients and temperature, unconsciously, numbers and logic are always at play in the background.

Today, everyday life is starting to rely more and more on technology, the base of which lies in numbers. The entire coding system works on binary, algorithms and arithmetic. Gone are the days when trivializing the significance of critical thinking was sustainable. It is imperative then to figure out an innovative approach towards teaching Mathematics and logical ideation to the upcoming generations in a manner that invigorates the mental faculties. This can be achieved with concepts such as using software and application-based learning, decreasing reliance on rote learning, corelating the applicability of book tuition to practical life and fun initiatives such as mathematics festivals etc. for our children.

As we continue to move forward, we must take on the responsibility of encouraging our student’s natural curiosity about the joys of Mathematics, logical and critical thinking and consciously inculcate the same within our education system.
