Redefining Leisure Living: The Intersection of Urban and Rural in "Villa Vernacular"
Leisure travel is in the midst of a transformative shift. No longer confined to weekend getaways or rushed vacations, the pandemic, along with the rise of remote work, has birthed a new kind of leisure: one that prioritizes solace, and natural beauty. But how does this seismic shift impact the leisure industry and the urban centers that were once hubs for the working population?
How Do We Solve the Rural-Urban Dilemma?
The proliferation of digital technology has diminished the relevance of geographical boundaries, granting us the liberty to inhabit more idyllic settings. Yet, this freedom brings its own set of challenges, such as the potential erosion of local culture and the threat of urbanizing serene, rural landscapes. In this complex landscape, how can we, as architects and planners, preserve the essence of the rural while accommodating urban amenities?
What's the Big Idea Behind Villa Vernacular?
Introducing the design competition "Villa Vernacular", a forward-thinking platform that aims to find the middle ground between burgeoning urban demands and preserving rural identities. The crux of this challenge isn't just creating a living space; it's about conceptualizing an entire lifestyle that aligns with local vernacular architectures while meeting the modern needs of the urbanite.
What Makes a Home More Than Just a Dwelling?
Our design mission involves a family of four—fully adapted to a remote work lifestyle—wishing to spend half of their year in the charming rural landscape of Suja, Himachal Pradesh. The objective here goes beyond crafting a mere shelter; the aim is to synthesize a holistic living experience that respects the local culture while providing the comforts of a modern lifestyle.
Why Suja, Himachal Pradesh Matters?
Suja offers a rare mix of breathtaking natural landscapes and a vibrant cultural tapestry, located in the western Himalayas. It's not just a backdrop for our designs but a character in itself that should be reflected in the architecture. The designs should not only provide the comfort and amenities expected in a modern dwelling but should also pay homage to the indigenous architectural styles and materials of the region.
What Are the Objectives and How Does the Design Address Them?
The objectives go beyond the architectural lines and blueprints. The design must center around the needs of the clients while incorporating local values and culture. The architectural plans should offer a blend of personal living spaces, shared recreational areas, and natural landscapes that capture the essence of both urban and rural life.
The objectives of the "Villa Vernacular" competition extend far beyond merely creating functional spaces. They dive into the holistic experience of the client and the contextual relevance of the design. Here’s how the design is geared to address these multifaceted objectives:

Villa Vernacular - Kerala (2020)
In the previous edition of Villa Vernacular, the focus was on crafting responsible leisure properties that resonate with the shifting paradigms of work and lifestyle. Set against the picturesque backdrops of Kerala, this design challenge pushed the boundaries of conventional villa architecture to meet the evolving demands of clients who are increasingly seeking solace in rural, less crowded settings.
The theme encompassed the importance of a new work-life balance, empowered by remote work opportunities, leading to a stronger affinity for natural getaways and long-term stays in the countryside. The architectural brief was to create a villa for a family of four, looking to split their time between urban life and a serene rural setting. Emphasis was placed on vernacular design, aiming to harmonize local rural identities with urban demands. Challenges around zoning, construction styles, and community integration were given due consideration, setting the stage for innovative, yet sustainable design solutions.
Kerala served as an idyllic setting, with its lush landscapes, diverse flora and fauna, and rich cultural tapestry providing added dimensions to the design objectives. The competition encouraged participants to deeply understand the local context, from Kerala's unique geography to its history and community ethos.
