Redefining Leadership: It’s Not About Titles, It’s About Impact

Redefining Leadership: It’s Not About Titles, It’s About Impact

We’ve all been conditioned to believe that leadership is about titles. We think of CEOs, Directors or Managers when we hear the word "leader." This belief can be limiting. It perpetuates the myth that only a select few can lead because they hold positions of power. The truth is that leadership is about influence—not a title. It’s about harnessing your unique gifts and talents to make a lasting impact, regardless of your job description.

Authentic leadership lies in how you inspire, influence, and empower those around you. It’s about using your strengths, knowledge, and passion to make a difference. Whether you’re at the top of the corporate ladder or working behind the scenes, you have the power to lead.

The difference between power and authority is crucial to understanding effective leadership. Power comes from your personal traits—your charisma, expertise, vision, and integrity. It flows naturally from within you and can influence anyone, regardless of position. On the other hand, authority comes from your position—your title grants you the formal right to make decisions and delegate tasks. But authority alone doesn’t inspire. It enforces compliance but rarely creates commitment.

Effective leaders understand the delicate balance between power and authority. Authority gives structure and allows you to act within an organisation, but it is your personal power that motivates and connects people. Your influence—your ability to inspire and collaborate—drives results. This is why leadership isn’t about titles; it’s about your ability to lead through influence, not just formal authority.

Leading from Within

A major misconception about leadership is that it requires a grand title or position. But what if I told you you can lead from wherever you are right now? No title, no hierarchy needed. The power to inspire, influence, and empower others is within you. All it takes is recognising that your personal power—your unique strengths and abilities—can shape the world around you.

Effective leaders inspire growth, and their influence goes far beyond their title.

Take the case of Indra Nooyi, the former CEO of PepsiCo. Nooyi's leadership was not defined by her title alone but by her vision, ability to inspire her team and drive to foster sustainable change. Nooyi transformed PepsiCo into a global powerhouse by focusing on innovation and inclusivity, empowering employees at all levels, and leading empathetically. Her success wasn’t about the title but her leadership at every company level. Long after her retirement, she’s still one of the most influential leaders of our time.

Let me share a personal story. In 2013, I left my role as the Managing Director of a thriving restaurant business in Nigeria. I led a team of 56 people, making strategic decisions, managing operations, and building relationships. I had both the authority and power to lead. I felt empty when I moved to the Netherlands and left that position behind. My identity had been tied to that title, and without it, I felt lost.

Only when a mentor helped me rediscover my strengths did I realise that leadership was never about my title. It was about the impact I could have on others. I started small, sharing my expertise by teaching cooking classes and entrepreneurship workshops, gradually rebuilding my confidence. Eventually, I focused on inspiring and supporting women in leadership roles. I saw women break barriers and embrace opportunities they never thought possible. That’s when I understood that leadership isn’t about your role; it’s about the difference you make.

Lead from Where You Are

So, what can you do today to start leading?

  1. Recognise your personal power—identify your strengths, passions, and unique abilities. Leadership isn’t about being perfect; it’s about using what you have to make an impact.
  2. Be intentional about your influence – Whether in a formal leadership position or not, you can influence others through your actions, words, and attitude. Start inspiring others with your vision.
  3. Create opportunities for others – Leadership is not just about your personal success. Support others to step up, grow, and lead in their own capacity. The more people you support, the greater the impact you make.

Remember, leadership is not only about the title you carry; it’s about the legacy you create through your actions. Authentic leadership is rooted in impact, not hierarchy. It’s about supporting others, fostering growth, and making a difference where you are right now.

As I always say, “Leadership is not about your title but about using your gifts and talents to impact people and our world.

So, step into your power today. Lead from where you are, and watch the world around you change.

Absolutely Ebere, leadership has nothing to do with job title. In my opinion it’s all about the effect you have on others. There are CEOs who create cultures in which people are afraid to stick their necks out, and there are team members who inspire others to show up and dare more. The latter demonstrates leadership, the former not. Thanks for this post!
