Redefining Joy Within Grief This Holiday Season

Redefining Joy Within Grief This Holiday Season

As we enter the holiday season, I believe expanding the conversation around grief is essential. The holidays are traditionally filled with gatherings, joy, busyness, and family time. However, alongside these moments of happiness, many of us also experience feelings of loss and sorrow.

Moreover, grief shows up in many forms – the loss of a loved one, the aftermath of a miscarriage, or a broken relationship due to addiction. These experiences can overshadow the closeness and connection we typically associate with the holiday season.

Today, I want to share some key points on navigating grief during this time, drawing from both my professional expertise and personal journey.

  1. Grief Has No Script

It's important to remember that grief looks, feels, and acts differently every year. There isn't one script that dictates how we experience grief during the holiday season. Some years might be filled with joyful memories of those who have passed, while others might be more challenging. The things that got you through past holidays that were life-giving or joyful might not land the same this time. So, don't put pressure on yourself to have a predictable experience.?

  1. The Power of Sharing

During the holidays, it's crucial to narrate your grief to those around you. People often get caught up in their own lives, and so the ripeness of grief might go unnoticed.

When asked how you are, seize the opportunity to give a real answer, sharing your true emotional state. You can express that, although you're managing, grief is very much alive for you during this season, without worrying about ruining the festive mood.?

  1. Checking In on Others

The holiday season can be a convergence point for various mental health challenges, making it more important than ever to check on those around you. A simple act of reaching out can have a significant impact on someone who is struggling.

  1. Embracing Aliveness in Grief

I like to explore the concept of 'aliveness' in grief. This holiday season, let your grief inform your life and allow yourself a bit of mischievous rebellion against the traditional narratives of grief. Lean into love, beauty, joy, play, connection, friendship, and the warmth of hugs and kisses. Our grief doesn't have to define our holiday experience; it can coexist with moments of genuine happiness and closeness.?
