Redefining Journalism: The Dawn of Big C Journalism

Redefining Journalism: The Dawn of Big C Journalism

Communities are more than geographic markers or shared postcodes; they represent collective memory, intertwined tales, and the heartbeat of human connection. And yet, when institutions like a long-standing local school or a cherished business close down, the loss is profound. It's not merely a physical void but an emotional, communal erosion, akin to the slow withering of the heart and soul of a place.

This is where the role of journalism becomes not just relevant but essential. The clarion call is clear: It's time for Big J Journalism to evolve into Big C Journalism, pivoting from a focus on broad headlines to an intimate embrace of community narratives.

Drawing from Eric Newton's visionary "teaching hospital model" for journalism education, we extend this analogy to the very essence of journalism. In this renewed paradigm, newsrooms mirror community health centers, with journalists akin to medical practitioners. They don't merely report; they diagnose the undercurrents, serving as the guardians of the community's pulse and well-being.

However, for this vision to manifest, there's a foundational journalistic principle that requires reimagining: objectivity. While once the bedrock of journalistic integrity, unyielding objectivity in its traditional form feels increasingly disconnected in our rapidly evolving world. This isn't about forgoing fairness or integrity. It's about acknowledging that audiences today yearn for journalism that isn't passive or distant, but actively engaged and deeply rooted in the community.

In the dawn of Big C Journalism:

  1. Dynamic Engagement: Reportage is not an endpoint but the beginning of enriching community dialogues.
  2. Community Collaboration: Communities actively co-create stories, infusing journalism with authenticity and depth.
  3. Forward-Thinking: Journalism transitions from merely spotlighting issues to championing solutions, sparking hope and change.
  4. Transparent Trust: Moving beyond rigid objectivity mandates full transparency in biases, sources, and methodologies.

Central to this transformative vision is the symbiosis of journalism with Equanomics – a synergy of equity and economics. It underlines the belief that every community story, every struggle, every triumph holds immense value.

However, there's another critical dimension to consider. The oft-repeated adage, "Democracy dies in darkness," isn't merely a catchy phrase; it's a chilling prophecy. When journalism falters, when stories remain untold and truths get obscured, it's not just communities that suffer – democracy itself starts to fray at the edges. The health of our communities and the vibrancy of our democracy are inextricably linked. A collapse in community spirit and connection often foreshadows the weakening of democratic values.

In embracing Big C Journalism, we're championing more than a methodological shift; we're advocating a profound change in perspective. From passive observers to active community custodians, from sideline commentators to frontline advocates, Big C Journalism becomes the torchbearer. In its light, communities find their voice, their strength, and their vigor. And with robust communities, democracy doesn't just survive – it flourishes, vibrant and undimmed.

Creating participatory media projects that spark dialogue and change. Community engagement meets journalism with a dash of social practice art.

What if we are already doing Big C Journalism but under the radar? How might those of us who've on the ground championing this for decades could find the support to expand and share our work?

Big J seems more prestigious, Big C seems more accessible. When I think Big J I think golden age of journalism. When I think Big C I think of FON concepts.
