Redefining Geo-political decisions
Yesterday's decision by American president Donald Trump to recognize Jerusalem as capital of Israel is going to unruffle many feathers in Islamic world. It may lead to tectonic shift in relationship between Arab nations and USA, who for many reasons were seeing America as their savior. Trump decided to please the Jewish lobby and Israel's supporters in USA, giving thumbs down to his friends and allies in Arab and Muslim world. Their perception of US as neutral and peace broker is is shattered and more so of Saudi Arabia who was getting very cozy with USA in recent times. This has clearly established one fact that petro-power is no more driving international relations which a few decades back was the major driving ploy for international alignments. This decision is definitely going to have backlash and is going to polarize the world further in terms of Muslim & non-Muslims and between allies of USA versus Muslim nations. There are now super-powers who are going to gain in this whole gamut of shifting alignments - Russia & China.
Chinese President has recently got thumping mandate to rule for another five years and are definitely going to fish in this muddy water. They going to play soft card with Arab nations, who so far were neutral towards China. Growing economic & industrial might of China may find huge market in Arab & Middle East nations which they would want to substitute for American market as USA has started putting embargo on Chinese goods. USA stand on South China sea issue has already created distrust and soured relations with Chinese government. North Korea who are indirectly prodded by China may become more aggressive with changing geo-politic relationship and try to be more offensive towards USA. India which so far is seen leaning towards USA would now like to take a fresh look in the gamut of new developments, as the political class is sensitive towards a large chunk of voter bank which they would not like to annoy by being seen close to Trump.
Next is Putin, who co-incidentally yesterday has opted for second consecutive term as President of Russia. As things stand today there is no iota of doubt on his re-election. Russia & USA have been on cross-roads on many occasions and have tried to assert their supremacy in international arena. Arab have so far not shown much affinity towards Putin and have a divided opinion of Russian policy on Syrian & Turkish issue. Putin would definitely use this opportunity to get close to Arab nations and try to portray America as villain. The consequences are that Donald Trump will be hero in his nation but is likely to lose majority of his disillusioned followers and allies. American policy of supremacy and invincibility is going to be challenged dramatically in coming years and will usher in new geo-political relationship.
