I recently had the opportunity to present at the A.I. in L.A. Innovation Summit. This event was an invaluable experience for anyone interested in the future of education and workforce preparedness, particularly in the realm of Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Exploring the World of Augmented Reality with Lens Studio and SnapML
During my presentation, I focused on introducing to the audience the transformative potential of AR in education using Snap Inc.'s Lens Studio. This powerful and free AR development tool provides an immersive experience that blends the virtual and real worlds.
Getting Started with Lens Studio and SnapML
I created a Linktree link that contains a variety of resources for the attendees and is also available for anyone by accessing this link https://linktr.ee/aiinla. Included in this Linktree link are instructions on how to use one of my favorite templates that incorporate machine learning (ML) in the Lens Studio platform. As students gain experience and curiosity on how to further custom an AR lens experience, they can learn more about SnapML.
SnapML, a feature within Lens Studio, allows students to start from pre-existing templates and gradually learn how to train their own models. This approach not only demystifies machine learning but also encourages students to experiment and develop their analytical skills.

Encouraging Non-Traditional Computer Science Students
Throughout the presentation, I shared strategies to help inspire students to explore limitless possibilities in their future careers. One tactic I use is to have students select an industry based on their personal interests, passions, or hobbies and (using their preferred AI tool) explore the types of careers available in fields like AR/VR or AI/ML within those industries. This approach helps students open up to a realm of possibilities. By identifying industries they are passionate about and working backwards to find job opportunities in these tech sectors, we can spark interest and engagement where it might not have existed before.
Personal Reflections from A.I. in L.A. Innovation Summit
As someone who has been working in the education sector for years, I found the summit to be incredibly enlightening. It reinforced my belief that we need to continuously adapt our teaching methods and curricula to prepare students for an increasingly AI-driven world. At the event, I learned about two valuable resources to help educators and students alike.
Conclusion
The A.I. in L.A. Innovation Summit reinforced the importance of innovative approaches in computer science education, especially in engaging non-traditional computer science students. By leveraging platforms like Snapchat's Lens Studio and SnapML, we can spark interest in AR and AI/ML and cultivate a diverse generation of tech leaders.
I encourage all education professionals to explore these approaches and seek out opportunities for growth. Whether it's attending summits, joining networks like Eduvators, or utilizing tools like Resume Scripter, staying at the forefront of educational innovation is key to preparing all our students for the future.
