Driving through historic neighborhoods was one of my favorite weekend things to do. The period correct homes that lined the street created a seamless/organic scene. Then I thought... "I want to live here someday!" These urban areas became more and more popular because of their location and charm. The size of the structures was typically an issue for buyers. The question then became: Do we remodel or scrape? In many cases the decision was made to scrape. I get it-some structures can't be remodel. The questions then become, what does it cost, and what should be designed/constructed in its place??
Unfortunately, with the motivation of "getting the most bang for the buck" many compromises have been made. The builder and client lean towards a simple boxy style to keep cost down. Many historic neighborhoods are overwhelmed, creating a hodgepodge of different styles. This action has caused a long-term negative effect to what attracted the person to these neighborhoods to begin with.?
Redefining Classic Architecture, may be one solution. By using historic details and design that has the street appeal and that "Always been there" look, while having the insides of a new home. Selecting the right neighborhood and design, build team for your project is critical. By selecting the Architect and Builder before buying the property, they can preview the existing home, determining the scope and preliminary cost of the remodel or new home.?
