Redefining Business Travel: Shifting from Meetings to Inspiring Creative Journeys

Prelude to Inspirational Business Travel

In our fast-paced, interconnected world, business travel has long been seen as a necessary, albeit often stressful, part of corporate life. We hurry from airport to airport, rush into back-to-back meetings, and rarely have time to truly experience the places we visit. However, my recent trip to London, where I took the time to visit the Tate Modern Art Gallery, the British Museum, the Museum of Natural History, and the Design Center, has profoundly shifted my perspective on what business travel can be. This journey led me to consider the transformative potential of turning business trips into immersive, inspiring journeys.

The Traditional Business Travel Paradigm

The prevailing paradigm for business travel is one of speed and efficiency. The goal is to pack as many meetings and work-related activities into the shortest possible time frame. This results in a whirlwind experience that leaves little room for rest, let alone for exploration or appreciation of the local culture and environment. But as I walked through the awe-inspiring exhibits at the British Museum and marveled at the diversity of human culture from ancient times to today, I realized there was so much more to be gained from these trips.

The Future of Work and the Role of Generative AI

As we look toward the future of work, it's clear that generative AI technologies are poised to play a significant role in supporting our productivity. These technologies can automate many routine tasks, freeing us to focus on more complex and creative aspects of our work. However, as AI takes on more productivity-related tasks, developing skills such as creativity, critical thinking, and empathy becomes even more crucial. And it's here that the concept of "inspiration trips" comes into play. It was at the Museum of Natural History , contemplating the vastness of life's history and our fleeting existence within it, that I truly grasped the value of every second and the importance of spending it on activities that nurture our creativity and growth.

New Perspective on Business Travel

What if we could redefine business travel? What if, instead of rushing from one appointment to another, we could immerse ourselves in the local culture, history, and unique experiences that our destinations offer? During my time in London, I embraced this alternative approach. I visited the Tate Modern Art Gallery , where the "Forms of Life " exhibition by Hilma af Klint and Piet Mondrian sparked my creativity and broadened my perspective. This experience underscored the potential of inspirational trips to enrich our professional lives.

The Benefits of Inspirational Trips

The benefits of these "inspiration trips" go beyond simple enjoyment. By immersing ourselves in new environments and perspectives, we can foster empathy, stimulate creativity, and gain deeper insights into different cultures. This, in turn, can make us more effective and innovative in our work, as we bring fresh ideas and broader perspectives to the table. Moreover, this approach to travel can also promote well-being, as it provides an opportunity to step away from the usual routine and stresses of work and to engage with the world in a more meaningful and enriching way. The Ai Weiwei: Making Sense exhibition at the Design Museum was particularly impactful, providing a visual representation of the societal and cultural impact of our work and reminding me of the importance of empathy in our professional lives.

New Form of Business Travel: Fostering Personal Development and Networking

In this new paradigm of business travel, the focus is not only on visiting different places but also on personal growth and making meaningful connections. To this end, such trips could include creativity-stimulating sessions, such as workshops or seminars led by local artists, designers, or other inspiring figures

Join the Movement: A New Era of Inspirational Business Travel

As we navigate an increasingly global and interconnected world, it's time to rethink our approach to business travel. Let's shift from rushing through meetings to embracing immersive and inspiring journeys that stimulate our creativity, broaden our perspectives, and foster personal development and networking. This becomes even more important as generative AI technologies reshape our workplaces, highlighting the need for human skills such as creativity, critical thinking, and empathy. I invite you to contemplate this new form of business travel and share your thoughts.

For me that would be more than perfect! I remember my visit to London when I saw hundreds of people sitting in parks at 10am and I thought why aren’t those people on the calls? But still questions remain: what is the primary goal of such a trip: doing business or widening horizons? When do You actually explore the culture and when do You meet your business partners? Maybe museum instead of evening wine?
