Redefining Authenticity: Pride, Brandon Kyle Goodman, and the Power of Representation
Disclaimer: As I navigate my new career journey in digital marketing, I’ve been revisiting past pieces that still hold powerful relevance today. This article, originally written during Pride Month and first published on Medium in 2022, has been refreshed to reflect not only Brandon Kyle Goodman’s ongoing contributions but also the connection between their authenticity and the power of intentional storytelling.

Embracing Every Story
It’s crucial to recognize that everyone’s journey toward self-acceptance is different. For some, embracing and expressing their identity feels natural and freeing. For others, it’s marked by hesitation and fear of rejection.
Personally, I’ve always found it easy to be open about my preferences, but reflecting on that has revealed the privilege I’ve enjoyed in understanding terms like bisexual and pansexual while others struggled to be seen or heard.
For many in the LGBTQ+ community, a lack of understanding or outright rejection creates profound isolation. Too often, people feel different or even wrong simply because their truth feels uncomfortable to others. The silence at family dinner tables and the overwhelming noise of parades can serve as reminders of this dissonance. Many of us know the pain of having our feelings dismissed or misunderstood.
Within the Black community, these challenges are magnified. The refrain, “It’s just a phase,” still echoes far too often. Actor, writer, and activist Brandon Kyle Goodman tackles these issues head-on, creating space for meaningful dialogue about queerness, Blackness, and self-acceptance.
Their story and their work are a masterclass in authenticity, a concept that aligns with the heart of impactful marketing: connecting with an audience through genuine, relatable narratives.
Brandon Kyle Goodman: Breaking Boundaries
Goodman’s influence extends far beyond their groundbreaking roles in the writers’ room for Netflix’s Big Mouth and Human Resources. Their book, You Gotta Be You: How to Embrace This Messy Life and Step Into Who You Really Are, is a love letter to self-acceptance, representation, and resilience. It reminds me of the importance of authenticity in building lasting connections, whether through a heartfelt story or a well-crafted marketing campaign.
In the interview with Firefox Presents, Goodman reflected on their experiences growing up in a world where representation of Black queer identities was scarce. They highlighted the importance of creating spaces where individuals can express themselves fully, a mission they bring to life not only through their advocacy but also through their storytelling on Big Mouth.

The show, which has continued to evolve since this article’s original writing, showcases Goodman’s commitment to diversity and inclusion through its nuanced exploration of identity and relationships.
Goodman’s advocacy is rooted in building chosen families and breaking generational barriers. They challenge us to embrace our own messy, beautiful truths. Their presence on social media, much like a brand’s digital identity, is a beacon of hope for many and proof that authenticity fosters trust and connection.
Representation That Matters
Representation is about more than visibility; it’s about seeing yourself reflected in ways that are authentic and empowering. Goodman often speaks about the lack of Black queer protagonists in media and how that gap shapes perceptions of identity. Their storytelling addresses this void and reminds us that everyone deserves to feel worthy, celebrated, and seen.
This principle resonates in the world of digital marketing, where authenticity is critical. Audiences want to see brands reflect their values, challenges, and triumphs. Just as Goodman’s voice in Big Mouth and Human Resources creates space for deeper conversations, authentic marketing creates opportunities for meaningful engagement with diverse communities.
Looking Ahead: Creating Space for Growth
Goodman’s upcoming projects promise to build on their legacy of inclusion and authenticity. In You Gotta Be You, they write:
“My intention is to revisit the experiences that have brought me to this present moment with as little judgment as possible, but with as much curiosity as I can muster. This book is my love letter to Black queer folks and anyone fighting to love themselves unconditionally despite not knowing what that looks or feels like. Spoiler alert: you are beyond worthy. You are enough as you are. If this is the last thing you read in this book, know that you are enough.”
Goodman’s message inspires us to embrace authenticity, not just in life but in the stories we tell and the connections we create.
