Reddits Research Program & Data Partners

Reddits Research Program & Data Partners

Reddit recently brought on a new Head of Research Science who announced that they were expanding the Beta Program for Reddit Researchers. The company indicated that they started with a small group of beta testers and are now expanding the program to a larger group. They put a call out for researchers to apply to participate.

"Selected participants will gain access to our product for accessing research data, enabling them to test the product, run queries, export data, and provide valuable feedback. At this stage, we’re specifically targeting PIs (Principal Investigators) at accredited universities who are comfortable interacting with APIs using SQL and Python wrappers, who can dedicate time to using the product, and who are available for feedback sessions."

Up to 50 participants will be onboarded in September to start testing the API and running queries for Research purposes. They haven't indicated what level of data access will be made available but I'm assuming it'll be more than the current data partners below get access to... however it makes more sense for that to be one of the learnings they hope get, insights around the usefulness of the data depending on the use cases.

r/reddit4researchers is different from The Reddit Developer Platform r/devvit, also in beta -where third-party developers can use it to create interactive games, utilities, or moderation tools.

Below is the list of use cases that Reddit considers "Commercial Use" and require permission.

  • Mobile apps with ads, promos, or paywalls
  • Search or website ads
  • Services, research, or data access for fees
  • Subscription services
  • Sponsorships
  • Licensing or royalty fees for products
  • Free product features available for upsell
