Red Flags for Dementia: Holiday Edition

The holidays are a great opportunity to reconnect with distant family and friends. This season is also a good opportunity to check up on elderly loved ones. AgingCare.com shares several warning signs for dementia. When you visit with your senior, ask yourself if they display any of the following symptoms of dementia!
1. Memory Loss
This is more than the usual absent-mindedness. You shouldn't be concerned if your aunt forgets what side dish you told her you'd bring to the potluck, but you should take notice if she forgot that she'd had a conversation with you at all.
2. Confusion
This confusion leads to a distinct inability to concentrate. According to AgingCare.com, confusion about times and locations is very common with dementia.
3. Misplacing Items
Specifically, this refers to putting items in odd places. For instance, your father losing his wallet wouldn't be a big deal; however, the fact that you found it in the microwave could be worrisome.
4. Inability to Perform Routine Tasks
Seniors might try to hide this deficit by having others perform the tasks for them. Your mom suddenly insists that your stepdad chauffeur her everywhere, even though she has always enjoyed driving. It could be because she can no longer remember how to start a car.
5. Sudden Change in Hygiene
Your mother--who would apply lipstick and foundation before making coffee in the morning--seems to have unwashed hair. Your uncle practically lived in dapper three-piece suits, but he's worn the same soiled tee shirt for three days. Your grandfather was a stickler for a tidy home, but now his apartment is filled with clutter.
AgingCare.com points out other indications of dementia. Any sudden change in your elderly loved one's routine, behavior, or personality is a warning sign for dementia. You need to stay vigilant throughout the year, but a holiday visit is an excellent opportunity to check up on your loved one!
