Red All About It!

MD Words: Welcome back to the latest edition of our newsletter as our wonderful UK “Summer” is in full swing. Most of the team have already been away on their summer breaks and are now back and raring to go for the last 5 months of the year. I hope all of our readers have had some time to relax and recuperate too. That said, we have still been extremely busy, and it is impressive to see the number of new and exciting clients that we have recently brought on board; we are delighted to work with so many forward-thinking businesses within the Marine industry. This month has seen members of the team attend the UK Chamber of Shipping Summer Lunch at the wonderful Signet Library in Edinburgh, and additionally we are all interested to watch the announcements from the new UK Labour Government as they look to shake-up the UK employment market. Hope you enjoy!

Chamber of Shipping's Annual Summer Lunch: Last month, Matt our MD & Paula, our Business Development Manager, had the privilege of attending the UK Chamber of Shipping's Annual Summer Lunch which took place in the fascinating and historic Royal Signet Library in Edinburgh. The library, with its rich history and stunning architecture, provided a fitting and inspiring backdrop for the event. The gathering brought together key stakeholders from across the maritime industry, serving as a vital platform for discussing the latest advancements, regulatory changes, and future challenges facing the shipping sector. It was an excellent opportunity for us to engage with industry leaders, policymakers, and fellow professionals, gaining insights that are crucial for staying ahead in this rapidly evolving field. Highlight of the day for us (aside from the delicious meal) was an inspiring talk by Temi Binitie from The Seafarers Charity. Her talk was a reminder that there is no shipping without seafarers, emphasising the essential role they play in global trade and the importance of supporting their well-being.

Our team had the opportunity to network with a diverse array of professionals, catch up with friends in industry and build new relationships that will undoubtedly benefit our ongoing and future projects! We extend our heartfelt thanks to the UK Chamber of Shipping for hosting such a well-organised and impactful event and look forward to next year!

The Election: Our latest blog covered the recent election and new UK Labour government’s plans to reform the UK employment market. As a follow up to this it has been interesting to see some more “flesh on the bone” around the new PM’s plans. The Labour Party have made a commitment to “making work pay” and to “legislate to introduce a new deal for working people to ban exploitative practices and enhance employment rights”. ?According to the King’s Speech and PM’s briefing notes, the Employment Rights Bill will be introduced within the Labour Party’s first 100 days in office (i.e., by 12 October 2024). The Bill will reportedly aim to deliver on Labour’s “New Deal for Working People” in full, which the briefing notes specify as including commitments to the following key areas (among others):

  • Banning zero-hour contracts and introducing a right for workers to a contract reflecting the number of hours they regularly work and for all such workers to get reasonable notice of changes in shifts with proportionate compensation for shift cancellations or curtailments
  • Ending so-called “Fire and Rehire” practices by providing for effective remedies in law and replacing the previous government’s statutory code on “Fire and Rehire”
  • Making parental leave, sick pay and protection from unfair dismissal day-one rights (subject to rules regarding probationary periods)
  • Strengthening statutory sick pay protection by reducing the earnings threshold for eligibility
  • Making flexible working the default from day one for all workers
  • Prohibiting the dismissal of a woman who has had a baby for six months after her return to work (subject to specific circumstances)
  • Establishing a Fair Work Agency to strengthen the enforcement of workplace rights

We’ll continue to watch this space and keep our readers posted of any key developments as they happen.
