RECs help hotel and resorts to meet Sustainability Development Goals (SDGs)

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development,?adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015, provides a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future. At its heart are the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are an urgent call for action by all countries - developed and developing - in a global partnership.?
These measures also must be adopted by hotel industry. Also note that tourists are increasingly more sensible to green measures. At this point, sustainability is an essential part of ECOHOTELPROJECTS business practices, since it was born.
Today, the?Division for Sustainable Development Goals (DSDG)?in the United Nations?Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA)?provides substantive support and capacity-building for the SDGs and their related thematic issues, including water, energy, climate, oceans, urbanization, transports, science and technology, the Global Sustainable Development Report (GSDR),?partnerships?and Small Island Developing States.
But what does it mean to be sustainable?
Indeed, there are many ways to market your business as sustainable, but the most common and generally cheapest option is purchasing renewable energy certificates (RECs).
Do not forget that becoming eco, is the result of an holistic view and 360o measures.
What are the Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs)?
Electricity can come from clean energy sources such as wind and solar, or from fossil fuels, such as natural gas and coal. However, once the electricity is delivered to your business there is no way to quantify how much of it comes from a renewable source.
Renewable energy certificates (RECs) are a measurement tool for states, utilities and businesses to quantify what percentage of their electricity is generated from clean or “green” resources, like solar and wind.
A REC is created for every 1 MWh of electricity generated and delivered to the grid from a clean energy source.
If a hotel uses 100 MWh/year and wants to market themselves as purchasing 100% clean energy, they will have to purchase 100 RECs to reach their goal.
Hotels are spread in different locations, how to manage this situation?
Since hotel groups tend to have several units spread out across several locations, as opposed to one large factory or office, the biggest challenge is coordinating the purchase of renewable energy across all properties and operations.
To make this easier, companies as EcoHotelProjects or Exener engineering suggest hotel groups to aggregate their energy consumption, among others tips.
If a hotel group knows exactly how much energy they consume in a specific region or country, they can then consolidate their purchases for each market, giving them more buying power and reducing the number of transactions necessary to achieve their goals.
I recommend hotel groups to map their operations and look at the various renewable energy alternatives in the different markets. Talk to industry experts as Jose Antonio Sáez Calvo, CEO of Exener Engineering, who can map out alternatives, and help a hotel group to find the solutions best suited to its global operations.
