Recruitment: The Untold Secret

A theory that has helped me and my team recruit Nurses in today’s climate
Firstly let’s discuss how recruitment is defined; if you check Wikipedia you will be greeted by a sterile overview of resource management, if you ask others they may tell you that it is a sales role, a select few will convincingly tell you it is about placing people in their dream jobs and supporting them (more sales pitches).
The untold secret about recruitment and something many recruiters wouldn’t admit is that recruitment is actually simple. I know, I know, you are recoiling in anger as you read that and you may even be thinking Neil Jones doesn’t know what he is talking about. However, let me elaborate…
Everything that works well, on the surface appears simple. There is an art to maintaining this simplicity. Think, what allowed industry leaders to strive beyond all competitors? Was it innovation? Sometimes. In most cases, it’s about simplicity. Successful people make their product or service more accessible and easier to understand. Ray Kroc saw the simplicity in the McDonald brother’s restaurant system / limited menu and he built an empire with it.
“You’re only as good as the people you hire” – Ray Kroc
Ok so now I have got you this far you may be thinking “Ok Neil, simplify recruitment. What happens when (insert YOUR common recruitment issue here)” Now, I understand that you cannot always control unforeseen variables and in fact, this article could easily be drawing parallels between recruitment and quantum theory. However, let us steer away from an inescapable black hole of negativity and focus on what I truly believe makes recruitment simple. Values.
Recruitment at its core is a marketing role, and this is why I believe that focusing on values can make recruitment simple. When Steve Jobs returned to Apple in 1997 he stressed that they would not focus on why they are better than Windows, They would not focus on speed or specification, they would not focus on telling people they sell the best business machines (although he believed they did). Ultimately Steve Jobs announced to the employees of Apple that they would not try coke vs Pepsi style marketing campaigns, they would not focus on tit for tat, and instead, they would focus on brand feel.
"Apple at the core – its core value is that we believe that people with passion can change the world for the better." – Steve Jobs
I believe that if you live and demonstrate the values of the business that you represent (assuming that they are in place and everyone agrees with them) recruitment is simple. You are no longer trying to find a candidate to fill a role, you’re a representative of the brand helping to communicate the feel of the business.
With this mentality and the support of Cheswold Park Hospital, my team has been able to fill numerous nurse vacancies during the worst nurse shortage in living memory and this has been achieved by ultimately finding the right people, with the right values and ensuring they will be working in an area that is right for them and matches their skill set.

5 年You make the point very well Neil I joined My current company not based on the job role that they needed to fill. I based my decision on the ethics and culture the business operates under and how that environment would both Create a future where I know I would challenge myself to develop new skills and where I believe I could make a difference to the business I was joining. You need to want to go to work each day not just turn up because there’s a pay check at the end of the month When a business gets the reputation that its employees feel like that the recruitment of people becomes much simpler
