Recruitment Radar - Issue 10

The one when we were Robbed but left inspired.

It was half term, what did I miss?

Well, we could talk about that TikTok, and what happened next. We could talk about how things got a bit hot down under the collar. We could talk about the general .... never mind.

It was a week when one of the most incredible humans, Rob Burrows left this earth. To honour Rob in some small way, the saved posts in today's Recruitment Radar are focussed on how to follow his advice.

"My final message to you is whatever your personal battle be brave and face it.

Every single day is precious.

Don't waste a moment.

In a world full of adversity we must still dare to dream.

Rob Burrows, over and out."

For Rob and for Mush. For all of the people and their families who live with MND.

Posts are hyperlinked to the titles. Let's Go! ??

The top "saved for later" for last week

  1. Recruiters, keep going ??

Catherine Stoddart huge congrats to you for opening the door to your new home. In a world that tells you, you can't, Catherine tells you, you CAN!

Catherine reminds you that building a career in recruitment can be one of the most rewarding industries to be in. The first thing to accept is, that it isn't an overnight win for the quick bucks (it really isn't).

However, if you like honing your skills, see the genuine value of networking, and get a kick out of helping someone move up in their career, then the rewards will eventually come.

And the rewards came for Catherine when she got the keys to her first house, which she had bought by herself. Life is full of possibilities and opportunities. Take them and make it a good one as best you can.

RECRUITER INSPIRATION & GOALS

2. Happiness is an inside job.??

The OG of motivation Tony Robbins shares a strategy for moving on from those stressful moments. It stems from deciding that life is too short to suffer.

Tony calls it the 90 second rule. You get 90 seconds to sit in the worry, stress, and concern and then you shift your focus. You accept what you can't change and you decide to move forward and take responsibility for your life right now.

Why? Because every single day is precious. Don't waste a moment or more than 90 seconds on what you can't control.

90 seconds might feel not enough time to reach the shift in your focus at first. It's a like a muscle. You can train it. Whenever something feels hard and too difficult, it's probably because you are working new muscle groups. Your strength hasn't developed, yet. You are not weak. You are not strong, yet.

3. Need to reset in the middle of a bad day or week?

90 seconds huh to accept what you can't change? How do you do that?

Try this approach. Ask yourself the following questions.

Questions inspired by Gary Neville.

Q: Did you expect every (day/week) to be a good (day/week)?

A: No. Ok, let’s get on with this bad day/week and make it the best bad day/week it can be.

Q: Did you expect at some point that placements would fall through?

A: Yes, more than likely. Ok, it happens and it happens to even the best recruiters. Control what you can control, influence where you can, and let go of the rest.

Q: Did you expect every sales call to be a good one?

A: No. It's ok, you will fluff it up sometimes, or your timing will be off. Let’s make sure we learn from our mistakes and just let go when the timing is off.

After a coaching session, I had this week, I am adding the following:

Answer the questions with kindness. Speak to yourself the way you would speak to a close friend. Use the voice of the person who reminds you who you are and how great you are. This is not a job for your inner critic! Give yourself permission to accept what can't be changed so you can shift your focus to action and what you can control.

4 . The magic is in the thing that you’ve been putting off.

And you know what "that thing" is, don't you? Old keys don't unlock new doors. Look back to Catherine's story above, she didn't avoid the things.

Sean McPheat reminds us that we already have the answers we need. So, what is that thing you have been putting off? Don't overthink it, just write it down now.

Imagine it is 24 hours from now. You are writing me a message to tell me about the action that you took yesterday that moved you forward. What did you do? What impact did it have?

It's a bit like the question* Sahil Bloom asks

If you were the main character in a movie of your life, what would the audience be screaming at you to do right now?

You know what the audience is screaming and you know what needs to be done.

Message me tomorrow and tell me what you have done.

*Thank you Michelle Flynn for introducing this question to me.

5. It is time to revisit the secret formula that drove my success as a recruiter and recruitment leader for decades.

Greg Savage once again has sage advice and direction for recruiters and recent "big billers" who are struggling to hit acceptable numbers now.

Note the word recent. When markets change, what got you here, won't necessarily keep you here. Greg shares how success in recruitment is lots of activity – done well, with the right people.

Activity x Quality x Target Market = Success = Fun and money

Greg goes on to break down the formula. The importance of activity, quality, and, target market. This is a must-read this week.

Now, remember the magic is in the thing you've been putting off. The thing is quite likely associated with Activity, Quality, or your Target Market.

Begin. Start it today.

Do you expect it to be perfect? No, it's ok if you fluff it.

Do it anyway, and work out how to improve it.

Do > Reflect > Make Conclusions > Do again with improvements.

That's what learning is.

You've got the tools to do this.

PERFORMANCE

And to leave you with this thought.

Recruiters are basically like David Beckham. Gary Neville said so. So put that in your TickTok and own it.

That's a wrap.

Summer is here, with longer and brighter days. Breathe it in, and enjoy it.
