Is recruitment dumb work?
Do you think recruiting is dumb work??I thought so when I was an HR Manager in a small local Ukrainian company. When I decided to switch into technical recruiting (because I needed to earn more), it looked like to throw away most of my knowledge about complex HR work: adaptation, training, payroll, motivation, etc.
After all, recruiting is just one of the functions of HR: a vacancy opens, then you find the right person and then the vacancy closes. It seemed soooo simple! But there is a such wide sea of variants and space for creativity between the starting and finishing points that I have never regretted my choice.?
A?few years later after switching, I was looking for people to join my team and the question arose: what distinguishes a "successful recruiter" from an “average” (there are simply no unsuccessful ones). Should a successful recruiter be very intelligent, or other qualities are more important?
It turned out that such a study was conducted in my Alma Mater. For the study, they collected data on two groups of recruiters and compared their personality characteristics with each other. They found that the level of IQ does not correlate with success or failure at work. According to the results of the study, another personality parameter, persistence, clearly influenced success in work.?It’s the first important ingredient.
Nowadays. A week ago I was in Paris and I had an interesting chat with Tris. We discussed what qualities are important for a successful recruiter.?He said that he values curiosity and fearlessness, but in fact it does not matter if a person is not able to do routine work.?It’s a second important ingredient.

Doesn't sound very attractive so far? Routine, persistence.?But this is easy to explain. Recruiting is a technology. If you persistently and insistently follow the technological process at every step, you will get the result?that you want.?
And here?is a third ingredient that really attracts me, it’s risk. Recruiting is like gambling, no matter what you do, no matter how correctly you take the previous steps there are always circumstances and other people that influence the process. Poker is also a simple game but there are not so many successful poker players.?
As a summary,?in order to be successful in recruiting, you need to be very, very smart, and persistent and capable of performing routine tasks and most importantly to be able to enjoy the process as a game.
What do you think?
Smart Recruitment for a Smart Future
3 年"The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, and wiser people so full of doubts." Bertrand Russell. I've been guilty in the past of being dismissive about my career in recruitment. I still want to use "" around the word career! Of all the things I could possibly have done, recruitment seemed like a bit of a cop out. And there were times when my desire to be surrounded by smart, decent people from whom I could learn was really not met. It made me wonder if I'd made a mistake leaving what I viewed as a 'proper job'.. But it wasn't a mistake. This can be a great industry. And there's plenty of thoughtful Recruiters out there. But I must admit, you CAN be dumb as a recruiter and still make a success of it. But why would anyone want to be?! Then again, the first rule of the Dunning-Kruger club is that you don't know you're a member of the Dunning-Kruger club!

3 年This was a super interesting read Anna Miroshnichenko! Curious to hear what other parts there are to the recipe in your opinion? And NO, recruitment is definitely not dumb work.
