Recruiting with Periscope / Meerkat

Recruiting with Periscope / Meerkat

Cameras, cameras everywhere and still nothing good to watch - or is there?

It may be the latest billion dollar fad ( Twitch's sell to Yahoo ) or it may just be the new mindset in learning, but "watching others get it done" is growing stronger than ever and it's a great tool in your recruiting arsenal.

For years now, YouTube has allowed the ability to create and post video, but it's always been a one-way channel during the filming and can feel scripted. YouTube viewers can give feedback after the fact by leaving comments, sharing and “thumbs up / thumbs down” but there’s always a little something missing.

Periscope and Meerkat

Now you have the power to stream and store, imagine a Google hangout or GoToMeeting with unlimited participants and full video / audio.

For a recruiter, you can discuss and interact about the job, the company, the offer, the compensation – you receive a realtime count of active viewers and can answer questions and comments as they happen and relay that message more efficiently to the masses in the same time it would take to relay one-to-one.

…and you can record and store for later playback for those that couldn’t make the show.

HOT: Periscope VS. Meerkat

Periscope has made recent news in its acquisition by Twitter and Twitter’s cutting off of open graph access to Meerkat, some would say that’s weakened Meerkat but for recruiting that’s made it in many ways stronger.

Both:

  •     Streaming takes place from smart phone
  •     Available on IOS and Android

Periscope:

  •     Viewing takes place only on the phone
  •     Twitter API support
  •     Streams can be recorded and playbacked at later dates.
  •     Account type: Twitter

Meerkat:

  •     View broadcast from the web ( with account with Meerkat Communities )
  •     Schedule broadcast – allows you to schedule and promote future broadcast, can be used for promotional event and mass training
  •     Search and find friends / brands / names
  •     Create an account with either your Twitter or Facebook account

Recruiting Personality:

Often recruiters are hired for their personality, how you hold yourself, your tone and presence – now all of that can come through.

Strategies, Suggestions and Plug:

  1.     Keep it to 10 – 15 minutes
  2.     Create an outline
  3.     Schedule and keep the date / time
  4.     Keep it simple
  5.     Purchase a Selfie stand and mic ( $24.49 ) to keep the image steady and audio even
  6.     Keep it personal but professional

This is bite-sized media; not YouTube and not a documentary.  You’re competing for time and attention and a media that’s always giving more more more – attract, attack and inform. A good strategy to keep in mind is the buildup, i.e., a series of information that any one segment on its own gives need information ( offer, location, compensation ) but can also give a richer understanding of the company viewed as a whole ( history, company size, message ).

Shameless Plug – we’re inviting all recruiters to take part in our training stream of “recruiting through streaming” and will be providing a e-book “how to” download with registration along with a list of third party plugins and tools to integrate Periscope / Meerkat into your CRM tools and marketing.

Go to https://www.truckingnowllc.com/ and scroll to the bottom and check-off "register for” our event and leave your contact information.

We've been big fans of Meerkat since it's launch a couple of months ago - and we've already been using it with Boots UK for chats with HoDs, a tour across their office campus and a Question Time with a panel of recruiters. It's the interactivity of the live stream that makes it exciting and useful - not the pure broadcast use. The Boots QT attracted over a hundred viewers for more than 30 minutes - and many live questions over Meerkat. No prep could prepare for real time questions. Here's something I wrote about the whole Meerkat v Periscope V Recruitment thing a while back: https://storify.com/andsomepeople/meerkat-v-periscope

We're very excited to try, test & buy MeerKat - we plan to cover our live events, office tours, Q&As/ testimonials and use it as content marketing for industry awareness at events like Cannes Lions.

Can you just imagine the review "What was this candidate like?", "I'm not too sure-- but he does great Max Headroom impersonation"

Sitting in front of a camera trying to make a video of yourself can be far more stressful than sitting with a skilled interviewer who can put the candidate at ease and extract relevant information. The video, like the CV, would have to be made relevant to the role and making multiple videos (you can't make a small tweak like with a CV) is impractical and time consuming. For some generic roles maybe a Video could have some value but we need to stop trying to use technology to automate the recruitment process. In my experience it doesn't work very well . This is a people business lets put people together in a room and see how it goes.
