Is A Recruiting Career Suited For Me?

Is A Recruiting Career Suited For Me?

Hi!

To all new recruiters out there:

I was contacted by a few new recruiters who took on recruiting positions because they had been promised the world with an unrealistic future.

First, I would like to wish you all sincerely great luck on your new position. You should be able to make many successful placements and enjoy what you do.

The reason I am writing this is to give you some insight about the real work.

If anyone tells you that recruiting is something you can do a few minutes here and there, claiming that the work is just matching resumes to job descriptions and then all that’s left is a check in the mail…that’s unfortunately deceiving.

I’ve been doing recruiting for over 15 years, and I have a fully trained staff of recruiters as well. I know something about recruiting, and I can share with you the following.

Recruiters who make real money are those who work from early morning to late night. And even some who work hard, putting in all the effort and countless hours, are unfortunately not making it. Recruiting is not meant for everyone.

NO, Recruiting is not just a “marketing” job.

You might think- let’s see, all it takes is sending a resume to a client-that takes about a minute to get done. Then setting up the candidate with the client-takes another few minutes. And bingo! You close a placement and sit back-...the check is in the mail.

Well! It might be everyone’s wish! But it’s far from reality.

To find the right candidates, you must focus deeply on the search. Employers are not that stupid- they will not pay for candidates they can find on their own via WhatsApp posts, etc. A successful recruiter will search for hours and hours, day after day, until they finally find one candidate who is a right fit.

It takes countless interviews with candidates to determine if the candidate is a fit. Recruiters also need to understand the culture of their client’s workplace. Some candidates can be a perfect fit on paper but then there's a culture shock at the workplace, which can potentially cause major damage to a company.

SO! If anyone tells you that you can do recruiting while you are at your kitchen table, or just work part-time here and there and you’ll be ranking in the gold, I am sorry to bust your bubble. I feel you should hear this from someone who has some years of recruiting experience.

I had many recruiters who worked for me in the past, full-time 40 hour shifts, and some did overtime as well. Some of them moved on to another career after a few weeks or months because recruiting is not like being a salesman who sells a service, and not like an insurance agent either. Aside from the fact that there are no residuals on a placement, recruiting requires “constant” grinding.

So you might ask- why am I still doing recruiting? The answer is that I like this kind of work. I am in it with my boots on the ground. I work from early morning to late at night. I am a natural networker and I enjoy this challenging work. I have a staff who I train and we all work the desk every day, enjoying the hard work.

Those who tell you that they are doing part-time recruiting and are happy, are recruiters who basically retired from their full-time recruiting job but still love to do this kind of work. They are not necessarily doing it for the money, they do it mainly to keep them busy in life.

My personal advice to those who seek a recruiting Job: If you are taking a PART-TIME recruiting position with the hope of building a successful career, please rethink it. Don’t believe those who tell you that you can get there easily. There is no easy way to do successful recruiting. It requires intense work.

Again, the reason why I write this is because job seekers asked me about this position if its something that can bring them an easy buck, and they told me that someone out there who has no experience in the recruiting field, never worked as a recruiter, and has zero idea of what the work entails, is advertising and offering to hire people telling them that they can become successful with just a little part time work.

I can only assume that their ultimate goal is having a BIG company with many employees. But it is unfortunate that they are just using people and hiring them for the wrong reasons. They called themselves a staffing group while they are nothing more than a Marketing firm, posting ads and doing employment agency type work.

I am always happy to help and see how people thrive. This is what I’ve done for many years- helping people maximize their talent, and finding them opportunities that matches their skills. I believe that those who are smart enough can understand that working for a marketing group that portray themselves as a recruiting/staffing group will not lead to a thriving future.

So here is what I suggest. If you are not ready to live and breathe a recruiting job, please don’t take it on. You might just make a fool out of yourself. Someone is using you to show off to their friends that they have a successful company, and therefore offers people unrealistic opportunities and is using others to feed marketing goals. This is not based on any business common senses.

Keep in mind that recruiters who work full desks are successful only because they never stop working. Consistency is key. They actually enjoy this kind of hostel, they look at every conversation, day or night, as an opportunity for business. And that's how we succeed.

I wish you great luck and feel free to reach out to me for any help.
