Recruiters - What Should You Be Earning?

Welcome to the latest edition of The Recruiter Life Chronicles, the ultimate resource for insights, trends and tips tailored for recruitment professionals. In this edition, we tackle one of the most pressing questions in the recruitment industry: "What should you be earning?"

Understanding Recruiter Earnings

Recruitment is a field where performance directly impacts earnings. Unlike many other professions, a recruiter’s income can significantly vary based on the revenue they generate for their company. Understanding what you should be earning involves looking at several factors: base salary, commission structures, and bonuses.

Commission Structures

Commissions are a critical component of a recruiter’s earnings, providing a significant boost to the base salary. Here are some common commission structures:

Flat Percentage: A fixed percentage (e.g., 10-20%) of the revenue generated from placements.

Tiered Percentage: The commission rate increases as the recruiter bills more. For instance, a recruiter might earn 10% on the first £50,000 billed, 15% on the next £50,000, and 20% on any amount above £100,000.

Threshold-Based: Recruiters must meet a minimum billing threshold before earning commission. For example, no commission is paid until the recruiter bills £20,000, after which they earn a percentage on all billings.

Bonus Structures

In addition to commissions, bonuses can serve as powerful incentives. Here are a few examples:

? Performance Bonuses: Quarterly or annual bonuses based on meeting or exceeding targets. For example, a recruiter might receive a £5,000 bonus for billing £200,000 in a year.

? Team Bonuses: Shared bonuses for teams that meet collective targets, encouraging collaboration and support within the team.

? Retention Bonuses: Bonuses awarded for maintaining a high retention rate of placed candidates, promoting quality over quantity.

Industry Statistics

To provide a clearer picture, let’s look at some statistics on recruiter earnings and billings:

? Average Billings: The average annual billing per recruiter in the UK is approximately £100,000, with top performers often exceeding £300,000 .

? Commission Rates: According to a survey by Bullhorn, the most common commission rate for UK recruiters is between 10-15% of billings .

? Total Earnings: Combining base salary and commissions, an experienced recruiter in the UK can realistically earn between £50,000 and £100,000 annually, with top billers potentially earning significantly more .

Maximising Your Earnings

  1. Negotiate Your Commission Structure: Ensure you understand and negotiate a commission structure that rewards high performance.
  2. Focus on High-Value Placements: Specialise in sectors with higher average placement fees, such as IT, finance, or executive recruitment.
  3. Leverage Technology: Utilise recruitment software and tools to streamline your workflow, allowing you to focus more on client and candidate relationships.

Conclusion

Understanding your potential earnings as a recruiter involves more than just knowing your base salary. By effectively leveraging commissions and bonuses, you can significantly enhance your income. Stay informed, negotiate wisely, and always aim for high-value placements.

Interesting read here! 10-15% average commission is why so much of our industry is flawed, if you want your consultants to really value their work you need to properly compensate them. Perish the thought their consultants charged 10% to the clients, yet their own employer low balls them daily ????♀?

10-20% is ridiculous... We offer our recruiters a significantly higher commission, although we operate on a commission-only basis.
