Recruiters Under Siege: Why Companies Cutting Recruiting Teams Hurts Them Most

Recruiters Under Siege: Why Companies Cutting Recruiting Teams Hurts Them Most

I noticed there is a lot of recruiter bashing on LinkedIn recently from people tired of applying and hearing nothing in return. I understand, I've applied for over 30 roles in the past 2 months and only heard back from a few. I know it is frustrating!?

The problem lies with the lack of resources and recruiting teams being lean. Recruiting teams have been one of the biggest groups impacted by the layoffs in the past 2 years. In addition to teams being cut - recruiting teams are also being asked to reduce the already limited budget and cut tools.

It's a vicious cycle - less recruiters, more applicants to screen, fewer resources to properly engage candidates. This trifecta causes delays in the hiring process and a poor experience for many job seekers.

As companies look to cut costs, recruiting teams get downsized first as they are often viewed as a support function rather than a revenue generator. However, this short-term cost-saving approach backfires as it severely impacts the ability to attract and hire top talent, which is the lifeblood of any organization.

The remaining recruiters have to do more with less - source, screen, interview, and manage the hiring process for many more roles with skeleton crews. I'm not making excuses, but rather providing perspective. Most recruiters are committed professionals doing their best in very challenging circumstances. They want to provide a stellar candidate experience, but the lack of staff and resources makes it extremely difficult.

Companies need to realize that strong recruiting teams are essential, not ancillary. Investing in recruiting during tough times, rather than cutting, can give organizations a competitive edge in attracting and securing the talent needed to pivot and grow.

To the candidates out there - please have patience and don't take lack of response personally. It likely has nothing to do with you and everything to do with understaffed recruiting teams struggling to keep up. You deserve better, and I hope companies wake up and properly resource their recruiting efforts again soon.

Navigating the current job market is indeed challenging for both job seekers and recruiters. The communication breakdown can lead to frustration on all sides. Encouraging companies to invest in their recruiting teams is vital for improving candidate experience and ensuring that top talent is not overlooked. Open dialogue and transparent processes can help bridge the gap during these tough times. How do you think companies can best support their recruiting teams moving forward?

It's important to acknowledge the challenges that both job seekers and recruiters face in the current landscape. The imbalance between the number of applicants and the capacity of recruiting teams truly highlights the need for strategic resource allocation. By prioritizing support for recruitment, companies can enhance the candidate experience and thrive in their hiring efforts. What do others think about specific strategies to improve the process during these tough times?

This market is tough for all. Some are abusing it, but definitely some are trying to do the right thing.
