What does it mean, when you get feedback that your resume is fine, or OK, or even good?
Here's an example if an email I received from someone I'm helping with their job search. This job seeker questioned why their resume had gotten feedback that it was fine, but couldn't get an interview with it when trying to apply for a job:
"1. I sent my resume to a recruiter who I have been in touch with on LinkedIn. In her opinion my resume was fine.
2. I applied for a job that was advertised on LinkedIn that was posted by a recruiter. I had a response in roughly 24 hours saying that they will not be pursuing my application."
Does this sound familiar?
I know what my wife means when she says something is fine ... It means she's not happy. I know what friends mean when they say something is fine ... It means that something's just OK, but I don't want to spend time helping you to improve it.
When you get feedback telling you that your resume is fine, OK, or good, here's what it means: It's what I expect an average resume to look like - average. It's not horrible, but you can do better. Why would hiring managers hire an average candidate, especially during a recession?
So a resume that gets feedback of fine isn't good enough to land many interviews or jobs even when you're qualified. Resumes produced by outplacement, most career coaches/authors, DIY, or certified professional resume writers/resume mills/job board resume services, are also basic, just average. You have to get pretty lucky for an average resume to work, even during a good job market, but during poor job market, average fails.
You could have all the magical keywords to get you through an Applicant Tracking System, but an average resume rarely gets through HR/Recruiter visual review, nor interests the hiring manager enough to score an interview spot. When they can choose better, they usually do.
Fine might be ok during a strong job market, if you want an average job and your job search has no difficult issues (including unemployment or being over 40). But in the worst job market in our lifetime, resumes that are fine don't get interviews, because they undersell you.
And doesn't it make sense that you need to do more than just be average to win in a job market that's much more competitive?
