Recently, I have been watching Indian Matchmaking on Netflix. I am aware of the possibility that many of you might not have heard of this program or even have the time to watch it. However, I believe this is a good one to binge watch if you are curious about what a recruiter does or feel working with multiple clients and candidates.?
It is funny and amusing to see how matchmaking has evolved over the years and we can see how women and men are empowered to find their life partners. I have made a few mental notes on our similarities of joy and pain in finding the perfect match while watching this series. Do have a look at the points below. Trust me, the resemblance is uncanny!
1.????Life partner check list vs Job descriptions
The check list given by both men and women seeking for their life partners reminded me of all the job descriptions, requirements, must have skillsets and good to have skillsets needed in a recruitment process. In this series, you can see Aunty Sima’s face when the potential bride/bridegroom list the criteria of their ideal life partner. In reality, we, recruiters, do tell our clients & candidates that it is impossible for us to find you the “unicorn” and it is always safe to keep your expectations open and fluid. Aunty Sima spoke about getting somewhere 60%-70% is good. To be honest, perfection is what we all seek, but adjusting, accommodating, learning, and growing together is what makes a relationship work. Same goes with work life. These are important things that sometimes employers and employees need to give and take to make things work.
2.????1st date vs 1st interviews
My, oh my! This is another interesting stage where I can resonate so much as a recruiter. The scene goes on about how these couples ask questions and interview their potential future spouses. The chemistry is very important and how things turn around after the 1st date is crucial. Same goes with first interviews. The hiring managers are always keen to know more about the candidates and vice versa. The instincts and intuition here plays a big role apart from the knowledge possessed by the candidates within their respective space. This determines whether the candidate is proceeding to the next stage of the interview. Just like the dates!

3.????Meeting the family vs Meeting the management for interview
Every couple need their family’s consent and blessings. Same goes with recruitment. Every candidate to be employed needs to go through the management’s approval and buy-ins. It is a very crucial stage as it is important to impress and ensure that this top layer of family and corporate house has the confidence in you before you can be selected to be a part of them. Your knowledge, wisdom, manners, ethics, and etiquette are the keys to success here.
4.????Marriage proposal vs Offer Proposal
Interestingly, it is another stage where a marriage proposal can turn out to be a success or maybe not depending on what both parties agree with. If you are not very happy with certain areas, you may be turning down the proposal or vice versa. Sounds familiar when it comes to offer package negotiations? ?Yes, you are right! If the offer proposal is not up to your expectations, the offer gets rejected and turned down. And some adjustments are needed before you can say yes or agreeing to accept an offer and move on.
?5.????Wedding vs Onboarding
So, it is important when it comes to wedding preparations. A couple will need to go through many decisions making process together from the date, venue, food, attires, budget and more before you come to the actual day of the wedding ceremony once a proposal is accepted. Same thing goes to the onboarding process – before the actual day of your first day at work, you will have to manage your resignation, counteroffers, exit meetings, background screenings, and so much more. Interesting how this relates right?!
Overall, I was truly entertained by this series due to my job and how all steps or conversations reminded me of my daily interactions with various people and personalities. Recruitment is indeed an interesting profession that comes with a lot of interesting challenges but definitely a fulfilling role. If you have seen how Aunty Sima is happy at the end of the show, still mingling and introducing herself to other potential customers, that’s pretty much how recruiters need to roll as well! Remember, resiliency is the key and never give up if you want to be successful!
