In an article for BBC News, Bryony Gordon describes her descent into a binge eating disorder and her eventual recovery.? In this open and honest exposure of what it’s like to be hostage to this very harmful addiction/habit she talks of how her recovery was ‘messy’, not linear.
?
This is important to remember.? Think of it like having your house re-wired, you would expect a mess until it’s all put back in the right place, functioning better than before.
?
Bryony describes how she turned to food for comfort during the Covid 19 epidemic and believes it was in response to the circumstances she found herself in.? This is very common.? When we feel overwhelming emotions, for example the fear that was prevalent during the pandemic, it can be hard to be with and process those emotions; they are too uncomfortable, feel too strong to bear and food can be a solace.? For others it could be alcohol or exercise.? The process is the same: strong emotion = feeling unable to cope, want to get rid of it = food makes you feel better (temporarily, but it’s enough to keep your subconscious hooked).
?
Recovering from any addiction or changing any unhelpful habit or behaviour is messy as Bryony describes.? It requires learning new ways of thinking and processing emotions, it may mean going back to painful memories for the last time to resolve them once and for all.? It can be disruptive to our emotional and mental wellbeing.
?
It requires a shift in mindset and thinking:
From shame to compassion. ?
From secrecy to openness and honesty - with yourself and those around you.
From hopeless resignation to a stubborn determination and heartfelt belief that this can change, that this doesn’t have to be your life.
