Recovered Dorm Beds Support Maternal Health

Recovered Dorm Beds Support Maternal Health

While remodeling St. Martin's Hall at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA, Radnor Property Group had to clear out hundreds of bed frames and mattresses. The furnishings were still in great condition, so rather than throw them away, the contracting company decided to donate them to Global Links. Over the course of two days in May, movers recovered over 500 dorm beds and mattresses. The company's decision to share surplus helped divert these furnishings away from landfills and gave them a second life.

Once at Global Links, the bed frames and mattresses will be cleaned and prepared for shipment to support maternal homes in Latin America. In countries like Nicaragua and Honduras, many mothers travel long distances in order to give birth. Maternal homes provide expectant mothers a place to rest and heal both pre- and postpartum. These beds and mattresses will go a long way to making this stay as beneficial and comfortable as possible.

Wow, this is such an impactful repurposing of resources by Duquesne University and Global Links.
