Record number of vehicle technicians becoming EV-ready
According to the IMI, the number of technicians qualified to work on?electric vehicles?has reached 28,000. A significant increase in trained technicians as the industry prepares for an electrified future.?
This latest research, which comes as Remit Training has launched a new suite of electric vehicle training courses, demonstrates that the first three months of 2022?saw the highest quarterly increase in EV-qualified technicians on record.?
However, while this trend is positive, based on IMI predictions, there will still be a shortfall between the number of electric vehicles on the road and qualified technicians to service, repair and MOT them, but it is now predicted to be later than first predicted in 2028 instead of 2026.
The IMI data suggests that at the end of 2021 11% of technicians were EV qualified, while at the end of March 2022 the percentage had moved to 13%, representing over 28,000 technicians across the UK.??early indications are that quarter 2 figures will be higher still, a real sign that the sector is responding to the increased adoption of EV motoring.
Mike Stokes, from Riverside Truck Rental, recently completed the IMI Level 4 Award in the diagnosis, testing and repair of EV and components at Remit’s Derby training academy, he said, “For everyone interested in completing a high voltage training course, Remit deliver the level four training course, which I would highly recommend. I work in a niche part of the market with high voltage HGV vehicles, however, Remit was able to tailor the course towards my specific needs.”

“The course includes everything from basic components and safely right up to in-depth diagnostics. The instructors are extremely knowledgeable and listen to your needs. So if this is an industry you want to get into, or you want to work on high voltage vehicles, I would highly recommend this Level 4 high voltage course.”
Commenting on the recent figures, Dean Rippon, Automotive Academy Director, said, “These figures demonstrate a promising increase in technicians who have taken EV qualifications so far this year. We have seen a significant increase in numbers on our courses, which also means a greater number of technicians becoming eligible for the IMI Techsafe accreditation.”
“The high voltage systems that electric and hybrid electric vehicles operate are, of course, potentially lethal. As vehicles change and incorporate newer technologies, it will become necessary to ensure the skills of those responsible for their service, repair, and maintenance are safe and qualified to carry out their duties.”
“From introductory awareness courses to technical diagnostic, testing and repair qualifications, Remit has developed a range of training solutions to help plug the EV skills gap the industry is experiencing.”
