Germany witnesses an increase in individuals receiving German citizenships

Germany has witnessed a significant increase in individuals obtaining citizenship in the past five years, with over 651,000 people obtaining German citizenship from 169 countries.

Approximately 23.3% or 151,995 Syrians and Turks were granted citizenship during the same period. British nationals became the third largest group of nationalities in becoming citizens of Germany with more than 33,000 people acquiring German citizenship.

This indicates that 80,435 people or more than 12% of the new German citizens were citizens of other EU nations.

Naturalizations in Germany increased by 50.2% since 2018

56,435 people obtained German citizenship between 2018 and 2022, representing a total of 50.2% increase. Over the period of these five years, naturalization rates have been steadily increasing at about 29%.

14,108 people on average became citizens of Germany during this time and the year 2022 witnessed the most number of naturalizations at 37,180.

Germany has revealed some policy changes in favor of dual citizenship and 16 federal states have approved this new citizenship law. With this approval from federal states, foreigners will now be able to hold dual citizenship which is both their original and German citizenship. This shift may result in about 50,000 individuals acquiring German citizenship.
