Reconsidering the #OpenToWork banner on LinkedIn: A call for nuance and personalisation

Reconsidering the #OpenToWork banner on LinkedIn: A call for nuance and personalisation

The green #OpenToWork banner is undeniably visible and helps job seekers showcase their availability to new opportunities. However, it presents a somewhat generic, "one size fits all" approach. This standardisation overlooks the diverse reasons individuals may find themselves in the job market. There are many other circumstances that lead professionals to seek new roles—career progression, seeking new challenges, relocation, or simply the desire for a better work-life balance, to name a few.

There is an underlying issue with the current wording of the banner. While it is straightforward, people might perceive a certain stigma with publicly declaring themselves "open to work." In reality, this should be a moment to celebrate one's experience and skills, showcasing them to a broader audience of potential employers.?

Given this, I propose that LinkedIn could enhance the banner's functionality by introducing multiple options that reflect the varied motivations of job seekers. Rather than a single, all-encompassing phrase, there could be a choice of banner styles or taglines, allowing users to select the one that best represents their situation. This would provide a more personalised experience and help mitigate any negative connotations that the current banner might inadvertently convey.

Ultimately, a revision of the #OpenToWork banner would not only empower job seekers by allowing them to present themselves in a manner that aligns with their personal circumstances, but it would also help recruiters and employers better understand the candidate's mindset and motivations. It is time for LinkedIn to consider a more nuanced approach, one that celebrates the diversity of career journeys and fosters a more supportive, inclusive job-seeking environment.

Here are some of my alternative banner suggestions that LinkedIn could consider to provide a more personalised approach for job seekers.

#ExploringNewOpportunities

This banner would be ideal for those who are not in urgent need of a job but are open to considering new opportunities that align with their career goals or interests.

#ReadyForTheNextChallenge

Suitable for individuals looking to advance their careers or take on a new role that provides greater responsibility or a fresh set of challenges.

#SeekingCareerGrowth

For professionals focused on moving up the career ladder, this banner highlights a proactive approach to personal and professional development.

#AvailableForNewProjects

Ideal for freelancers, consultants, or those open to contract or project-based work, signalling their availability for short-term or specific types of engagements.

#ExploringNewIndustries

Perfect for those who are looking to switch industries and want to attract employers open to candidates with transferable skills from different fields.

#ReturningToTheWorkforce

For individuals who have taken a career break for personal reasons, such as parental leave or caregiving, and are now ready to re-enter the job market.

#OpenToRemoteWork

This banner would be great for those seeking remote work opportunities or positions that offer flexibility.

#InternationalTalent

Signalling an individual is a candidate seeking opportunities in another country.

Yes i totally agree with this. Im in full time work and not in urgent need of a job but would like to see what other opportunities are out there, as im currently deciding if my cirrent job fits my current situation. Also fearful of backlash and comments from current managers and colleagues if i add this banner to my profile.

I couldn't agree more. I posted something similar about 4 months ago.
