Reconsidering Assumptions: Thoughts on Community Involvement

A recent personal incident got me thinking about the pervasive role of 'assumptions' in our lives. In our daily routines, we often make assumptions, some harmless, while others can be downright detrimental.

Let's start with the assumptions we hold about ourselves - our preferences, desires, and habits. These self-imposed assumptions can confine us within our comfort zones, hindering us from exploring new horizons. Are these assumptions the invisible walls that define our comfort zones?

Then there are the assumptions we make about others. We presume to know their likes, emotions, or thoughts. Such assumptions can lead to misjudgements and, in the worst case, prejudice. It's a common pitfall to believe that just because someone looks different, they must feel differently, or conversely, that those who resemble us must share our thoughts and sentiments.

But the most impactful consequences arise when we scale these assumptions to a societal level, making sweeping judgments about entire communities. As a social scientist, I've witnessed the repercussions of assuming what communities need without genuinely understanding their priorities. This often results in the misallocation of resources and resistance to well-intentioned initiatives.

So, the lesson here is straightforward yet profound: Instead of assuming, let's ask and involve. Engaging in open dialogues and seeking genuine understanding can break down the barriers that assumptions create. It's through these connections that we can make meaningful progress and create a positive impact on the world.

Very well articulated Asra...in an overly interconnected world we live in, its hard not to judge or assume! Also the reason for people becoming rigid as they age! Experience leads to prejudices...its a double edged sword that most people fail to use...
