Reconnecting with What Matters

It’s been a while since my last update, but with good reason—I’ve been on a journey of disconnection to reconnect more deeply with myself and my loved ones. This summer has been about stepping back to savor moments of tranquility, and I’m eager to share some insights and stories from this introspective time.

The Power of a Digital Detox

I made a decision to do a digital detox, after reading about a friends annual digital detox and the positive impacts it has had on him, his family and his business. My decision to take a break from social media wasn’t taken lightly, but it was necessary. This digital detox involved starting my days with tranquil morning walks, where instead of podcasts or playlists, I immersed myself in the natural sounds around my neighborhood and the lake behind our home. This simple change has profoundly enriched my mornings, sparking creativity and fostering a daily practice of gratitude.

Disconnecting from the constant flow of digital information has allowed me to escape the often inevitable comparison trap and address other mental health challenges head-on. It’s been a time to reflect inwardly, recognize what needs to change, and more importantly, acknowledge what should continue.

Leadership Lessons Applied to Life

This process mirrors a practice I often employ in leadership roles, asking myself and my team to consider what we should stop, start, and continue. It’s a technique that proves just as valuable in personal development as it is in professional environments. I would offer that you consider a regular practice of asking what you and your team should stop, start and/or continue.

Road Tripping with Purpose

A standout moment from my travels so far this summer was a road trip with my daughter from Denver to San Francisco. This wasn’t just a journey across states; it was a chance to deepen our bond and lay the groundwork for what might become an annual tradition. Watching her ease and joy throughout the trip, contrasted with my own childhood experiences, filled me with gratitude for the opportunities we have to shape our children’s memories.

Looking Forward

As we continue to enjoy the summer, I’m curious about your own experiences. How are you disconnecting from the digital world to reconnect with yourself and your loved ones? What new traditions or practices are you considering to enrich your personal and family life?

Let’s make the most of the remaining summer days, finding joy in the little things and peace in the moments we create.
