Reconnecting with Cultural Traditions: A Call for Understanding and Conscious Commitment

In our increasingly globalized world, where cultures intersect and blend, there remains a pressing need to reflect on the essence and significance of our cherished cultural practices. Recently, during a heartfelt discussion with my family, a poignant topic emerged – the diminishing understanding and commitment to our cultural rituals, particularly within the context of marriage traditions in the Kikuyu culture.
The conversation was sparked by the apparent disregard of a relative towards her assigned role during a betrothal ceremony. As my parents expressed their disappointment, I couldn't help but reflect on the profound disconnect between the young generation and the true essence of our cultural practices. It was then that I realized the urgency of addressing the issue at hand.
Cultural rituals, in their essence, are not merely customs or ceremonies; they represent sacred covenants that bind individuals to their heritage and lineage. Yet, I fear that many young Africans are embracing these practices without fully comprehending their implications. They embark on the journey of two weddings – the traditional and the religious – often for the sake of appearances and content, without recognizing the weight of the commitments they are making.
These covenants, I emphasize, become the guiding principles by which couples must navigate the complexities of their relationships. From decisions about raising children and managing finances to intricate matters such as circumcision, these rituals lay the foundation for the fabric of their shared lives. Yet, in our contemporary haste and distraction, we seem to have lost touch with the profundity of these cultural commitments.
I cannot help but wonder whether the root of this issue lies in the lack of proper education and guidance provided to our youth. As I voiced my concerns, I called for a more profound and intentional approach to educating our young people about the significance of cultural traditions. I advocate for an early initiation into the understanding of these practices, perhaps around the age of 13 or 14, when they are learning about the intricacies of life and relationships.

While tradition undoubtedly serves as a beautiful homage to our roots and ancestors, it should not be upheld for the mere sake of adherence. It requires a deep understanding, respect, and conscious commitment. If one is not prepared to honor these traditions in their entirety, perhaps it is better to adhere to the solemnity of a church wedding, leaving the cultural ceremonies for those who are ready to embrace them wholeheartedly.
Let us not reduce these profound cultural rites to mere photo opportunities or superficial displays. Instead, let us embrace them with the reverence and understanding they deserve, ensuring that they serve as pillars of strength and wisdom in our personal and communal lives.
As we move forward in this ever-evolving world, let us not forget the significance of our cultural heritage. Let us educate, enlighten, and encourage a genuine appreciation for our rich traditions, fostering a future generation that is deeply rooted in their cultural identity and understanding. Only then can we truly honor the legacy of our ancestors and ensure the preservation of our invaluable heritage for generations to come.
