Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), also known as vascular
permeability factor (VPF), is a potent mediator of both angiogenesis
and vasculogenesis in the fetus and adult. VEGF is a glycosylated
mitogen that specifically acts on endothelial cells and has various
effects, including mediating increased vascular permeability,
inducing angiogenesis, vasculogenesis and endothelial cell growth,promoting cell migration, and inhibiting apoptosis. Six forms of
human VEGF mRNA encoding VEGF proteins of 121, 145, 165, 183,
189, and 206 amino acids are produced from a single gene as a
result of alternative splicing. VEGF165 appears to be the major gene
product found in human tissue and is the most effective angiogenic
factor in the VEGF family.
