Recognizing The Need for Speed in ALS Patients

Recognizing The Need for Speed in ALS Patients

Author: Nazem Atassi, Global Head of Early Neuro Development, Sanofi

In the past month, it has been a pleasure to witness the incredible progress being made in neurology, first at ECTRIMS in Amsterdam and most recently at the Northeast Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Consortium #NEALS in Florida. After a period of being unable to attend conferences in person, I felt energized sitting amongst so many brilliant minds who share the mission of improving care and providing hope to the #ALS community.

The need for accelerating development

As someone who has cared for people living with ALS in clinic for 10+ years, NEALS is a special place to be. We are all too familiar with the fact that every minute counts for those living with this devastating disease and their loved ones. It is apparent in every conference, on every phone call and in every story of someone who knows ALS on its deepest level. These past couple of weeks, I was inspired to work alongside trailblazers in the field to discuss the progress being made on the research, patient care, and advocacy fronts. The tremendous amount of work still needed feels more urgent than ever for the over 200,000 people living with ALS globally.

Changing the standard of care to deliver hope

The only way to develop safe and effective treatments for persons with ALS is to work hard, work fast, and work together.

Every small step made to uncover new therapeutic options cannot be underestimated. I am so very proud of the #ALS team at Sanofi, who presented our latest research in ALS at the NEALS annual meeting. Sanofi is committed to working quickly with the ALS community to advance ongoing research into investigational treatment options.

I look forward to witnessing all the progress to come and feel confident this will happen by placing even greater emphasis on scientific innovation and excellence. The ALS community is strong and resilient – they won’t give up and neither can we.

Great progress in ALS and Neurology! However, we need still need better ALS treatments and speed is essential. Congresses like NEALS are a great inspiration with researchers, drug developers and patients learning from each other.
