Recognizing Environmental Justice on International Human Rights Day

December 10 was International Human Rights Day, a day designated to commemorate the 1948 adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the United Nations General Assembly. This year’s theme was “Freedom, Equality and Justice for All.”

Environmental justice is a cornerstone of human rights, and ensuring fair access to a clean and healthy environment is not just an ecological imperative but a fundamental right for all. Every individual, regardless of background, deserves a life free from environmental discrimination. This is one of the most important reasons why finding clean energy solutions is so critical.

FuelCell Energy’s fuel cell platforms are delivering solutions that create and store power without negatively impacting the atmosphere, in addition to technology that efficiently captures carbon in heavy industrial sectors.?An example is FuelCell Energy’s clean energy solutions helping communities is our Tri-gen system at the Port of Long Beach.

Long Beach has had some of the worst air quality in the nation, but efforts are under way to improve it. By supporting Toyota operations at the port, Tri-gen's carbon neutral products are expected to reduce more than 9,000 tons of CO? emission from the power grid each year. Tri-gen will also help to avoid more than six tons of grid NOx emissions, which are harmful to both people and the environment, and has the potential to reduce diesel consumption by more than 420,000 gallons per year by using hydrogen-powered fuel cell trucks in port operations.

FuelCell Energy's Mission

In 2023, FuelCell Energy established a Human Rights Policy and is launching employee training to prepare our team to better recognize any occurrence of violations of human rights and properly respond to such events.
