Ultra-small push-in (SMP) connectors are highly shielded, very small interconnects commonly used to miniaturize high-frequency coaxial modules and high data-rate applications such as antennas, broadband installations, test and measurement, and quantum computing. The product was developed by Gilbert (now Corning Gilbert) in the late 1980s and marketed as a GPO (Gilbert Push-On). The popularity of GPO led to a demand for a version that could be standardized for military use. CDI engineers (now Carlisle Interconnect Technologies) contributed to the standardization of the interface that became what we know today as SMP. SMP is widely used to facilitate dense packaging in RF/microwave applications.
SMP connectors get their name from their easy-to-use design: The installer simply pushes these plug-in connectors together to make the connection. They can be easily pulled apart. Three different levels of braking - the engagement/separation force required to establish or disconnect the connection - are available: full bore, finite bore, and smooth bore. In addition to the push-in plug-in form, snap-in SMPs are also available.
