In Recognition of My DAD – PART 2
Robin Miles
Enabling individuals & teams to achieve peak performance through enhanced collaborative leadership.
As my first post about the key lessons my Dad taught me went down so well – Here’s is No. 2!!! Don’t worry this one is a bit shorter!
This was another one of the MOST POWERFUL moments in my life. I was about 8 years old and I was at home alone. I loved woodwork (Family history of Carpenters) and at Cub Scouts my Dad had come along to teach the kids how to carve a wooden spoon.
My one wasn’t quite complete and instead of waiting for anyone to help me. I picked up a small kitchen hand knife to give it go! My 1st MISTAKE was using the WRONG tool, my 2nd MISTAKE was cutting towards myself!!
YES you know what’s coming!! I sliced deep into my thumb, the flesh just flapped down. I immediately held it back up but it was bleeding really bad. I was on my own in the home and I fell down on the floor, as I was getting dizzy. I was thinking OH SHIT!!
Then yes you know it, guess who comes in – MY SAVIOUR – MY DAD.
He opens the front door looks at me. NO REACTION. He calmly walks up to me and says “IF YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT TO DO NOW THEN YOU ARE NEVER GOING TO”.
He then proceeds to leave me in the kitchen on the floor on my own as he walks out the back door and down the garden!!!! (I hope there aren’t any Child Safety people reading this!! J).
I THINK to myself… I know, COMPRESSION and ELEVATION. I hold it tighter with a cloth from under the sink cupboard and hook my hand over into the sink whilst I am on the floor to elevate it.
It must have only been a few minutes and then comes back my DAD. He CALMLY looks at me and says “That’s better, compression and elevation”. He then looks at it and says ooooh you did that good, that needs STICHES!
LESSONS LEARNT
1. In a situation NEVER Panic!
2. Allow people to learn their own lessons – They will never forget them
3. People do know what to do in our hearts, we just need to tap into it
4. Have BELIEF and TRUST in yourself.
5. Don’t use a Kitchen Knife for woodwork and always cut away from yourself!!!
