Recognising women at JBS&G

?To mark International Women's Day 2024, we spent time with some of the many exceptional women at #JBS&G to hear about their careers, life and messages to the next generation of environmental scientists and project managers. Here's what they had to say.

Hello Mikayla!

Mikayla is a Senior Project Manager and Contaminated Land Team Lead, who says there's something special about a career spent working with otherwise unsightly sites, to turn them into something beautiful and useable for the community.

IWD 2024 - Count Her In: Invest in Women. Accelerate Progress.

We asked Mikayla what this year's IWD theme means to her.

"With this year's theme I thought about something that sits with me a bit. Like many women I have experienced 'Imposter Syndrome'. I've not typically been someone to ask for a promotion or new role, but there have often been opportunities presented to me throughout my career.

"Somtimes my initial reaction to those opportunities would be to question whether I'm ready and can do it, whether I should turn it down. But I was given some advice from a male colleague - 'back yourself in, we've got your back - just give it a go'.

"They reminded me that when you're presented an opportunity, to remember that you've been asked for a reason - so back yourself in, and give it a go, because they've got your back.'

"This year's IWD theme made me think about those who have invested in me, or backed me and the way that has helped accelerate my professional and personal growth.

"I can honestly say JBS&G is a great company to go through that with - you've got people happy to say 'we've got your back, have a go'. I've never once felt there's some sort of glass ceiling that needs to be broken, there's never been an impediment for me. I've never felt that because I'm a woman there's less of an opportunity here or that I'm treated differently*."

Mikayla's advice to other women this International Women's Day quite naturally followed - "Work at a company that has your back. It may not happen everywhere, but I've been fortunate here."

Mikayla's closing message - "Back yourself in. It's a confidence thing. Roll up your sleeves and get it done. Because you can do it".
