Recognising UK Disability History Month 2024 and committing to a Disability Confident Future
As UK Disability History Month comes to an end, JourneyHR ’s Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion team take this opportunity to reflect on the importance of recognising this significant event.?
Disability History Month is a time to raise awareness, celebrate achievements, and honour the individual journeys of people with disabilities. This annual event not only educates us about disability rights and inclusion but also highlights the valuable contributions of disabled individuals to society. It serves as a platform to showcase the progress made in disability advocacy, address ongoing challenges, and champion a more equitable and inclusive world.?
This year’s theme focused on?livelihoods and employment, shedding light on the barriers disabled people face in the workplace. From discrimination and accessibility challenges to the urgent need for supportive environments, the message is clear: much work remains to be done. Alarmingly, employment rates for disabled individuals in the UK have yet to recover to pre-pandemic levels. Employers of all sizes play a critical role in creating equitable opportunities and attracting talented individuals by fostering disability inclusion.?
One impactful initiative is the UK? Disability Confident Employer?scheme. This government programme supports businesses in building inclusive cultures, ensuring accessible recruitment processes, adopting workplace adjustments, and promoting physical accessibility. By joining, organisations commit to breaking down barriers, valuing diversity, and fostering workplaces where everyone can thrive.?
