Recognising The Signs of Emotional Stress

Do you feel any changes in your body? Do you notice any shifts in the way you’re thinking and feeling? Let’s take a moment to consider one of the more distinctive manifestations of stress and see how it might be affecting you.

?All you need is love. But a little chocolate now and then doesn't hurt.

-?????? Charles M. Shultz

Emotional stress often produces a wide array of unpleasant effects in its wake. It can cause people to react in different ways, sometimes leading to irritability, a loss of energy, self-doubt, self-sabotage or even to debilitating states of anxiety and depression.

Recognising the symptoms can help you to develop awareness of how much emotional stress if affecting you.

Signs of emotional stress include:

?

·????? Irritability

·????? Depressed mood

·????? Anxiety

·????? Easily angered or frustrated

·????? Physical and mental fatigue

·????? Loss of libido

·????? Difficulty falling asleep

·????? Loss of appetite – or overeating

·????? Poor concentration

·????? Poor memory

·????? Muscle aches

·????? Frequent headaches

·????? Upset stomach and digestive problems

·????? Rapid heartbeat

There are many possible causes for emotional stress but these are some of the more common symptoms. Please bear in mind that if your emotional stress lasts too long or happens too often, it can lead to more serious conditions such as depression. It’s also been linked to a wide range of illnesses including heart disease, obesity and inflammatory response disorders.

So, it’s obviously important to recognise the problem before it gets out of hand.

You can’t always control what goes on outside,

but you can always control what goes on inside.

–????? Wayne Dyer

One of the main obstacles to any form of successful, mindful relaxation is the emotional reaction that can be traced back to the amygdala, the survival-oriented part of the brain that drives us to react to stress instantly and in potentially negative ways.

Yet, when we learn to pause, to breathe a little more deeply and confront our circumstances with a very simple question, we can learn to turn down the stress response and engage the part of our brain that lends itself to logic, creativity and a rational approach to resolving our challenges and problems.

And what’s the magic question It couldn’t be simpler. You simply take a couple slower, deeper breaths and ask yourself

‘What if……’

and then consider the ideas and alternatives that are available to you.

‘What if – I choose to stay to calm and think this one through.’

‘What if - I count to ten before replying.’

‘What if – the other person’s anger doesn’t mean that I need to get angry.’

‘What if – I use my creativity to find a way to resolve this problem.’

You are braver than you believe, and stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.

–????? Christopher Robin

The list is endless. But the question is designed to switch your focus from the primitive, fear-driven part of the brain - the part that generates the stress response - and engage the higher brain function. And guess what? The two parts of the brain are chemically connected. Turn up the stress and your cognitive function is reduced. Turn up the higher brain function – and your fear and stress responses are naturally turned down and suppressed.

What an elegantly simple yet powerfully effective way to take control of your stress. Try it right now and notice how easy it is to shift from anxiety to creativity. It’s a priceless gift to give to yourself and a fabulous way to take control of your life.

Of course, you’re free to use this amazing technique in any area of your life where you feel you have conflict, obstacles, destructive habits, counter-productive behaviours or just too much stress, fear, doubt and anxiety. It’s such an effective way to take back control of your life empower the way you think, feel and behave.

Your mind will answer most questions if you learn to relax and wait for the answers.

–William S. Burroughs
