As I’ve been working with a diverse range of clients lately, I’ve noticed a recurring theme. Regardless of profession, many people share a common struggle: a lack of self-esteem.
Understanding Self-Esteem
Let's clarify something important. Self-esteem is not the same as self-confidence. Self-confidence is about your belief in your ability to perform tasks and meet challenges. In contrast, self-esteem is about how you view yourself as a person—your intrinsic value and worth.
Your self-perception lays the groundwork for every step you take in your career. If you don’t believe in your worth, it can hinder your ability to seize opportunities and pursue goals.
The Effects of Low Self-Esteem
Low self-esteem can lead to indecision or fear of failure, preventing you from making bold choices that could propel your career forward. When self-esteem is low, it’s easy to fall into the trap of tying your worth directly to your productivity. You might find yourself in a relentless cycle, constantly pushing through tasks, taking on more responsibility, and working tirelessly—all in a bid for validation.
This quest for approval can become exhausting and overwhelming. Moreover, when you’re not valuing yourself properly, it often leads to blurred boundaries between personal life and work. You may struggle to say no, allowing others’ demands to infringe upon your time and energy. As a result, you may feel stretched thin and drained as you prioritize others over yourself, reinforcing the very low self-worth you're trying to combat.
Not knowing your value can lead to lower pay, a frustrating reality for many. When you are unsure about what you bring to the table, it becomes difficult to advocate for yourself during salary negotiations.
Speaking of that table, you deserve a seat there as much as anyone else. As diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives face mounting challenges, you may begin to question your value. Here’s the truth: you are smart, talented, and gifted in ways many aspire to be. Your intelligence is evident in your achievements and creative problem-solving. Your talents allow you to navigate complex situations effortlessly and provide a unique perspective that enriches any workplace.
