Reclaim Your Health at 40+

Reclaim Your Health at 40+

Listen to the episode here!

Aging is inevitable, but how we age? That’s in our hands. Too often, I see people hitting their 40s and 50s with this idea that their best days of physical health are behind them. Sure, our bodies naturally experience declines in muscle mass, metabolism, and fitness as we age, but here's the truth: we can slow down, even reverse, a lot of that if we take action.

Nearly 95% of older adults have at least one chronic disease, and 78% have two or more. These numbers aren’t just statistics—they represent what happens when we let health take a backseat. As life gets busier, it's easy to push things like fitness and nutrition aside, but the cost can be severe.

Muscle mass declines by about 3-8% per decade once you hit 30, and that rate only speeds up after 60. That loss of strength increases the risk of falls, fractures, and losing the independence we’ve fought hard to maintain. But here's the upside—regular strength training can combat this. It proves that no matter where you are in your journey, it’s never too late to take control.

On this episode of the Health & Wealth Power Hour, I had the pleasure of sitting down with @Allan Misner, a health and lifestyle coach who's made it his mission to help people over 40 reclaim their health. Allan’s journey from being a corporate executive to a health advocate is a story many of us can relate to—pouring everything into work, only to realize our health is slipping away.

The Turning Point

Allan's story isn’t unfamiliar. At 39, he was a C-suite executive at a Fortune 500 company. He had climbed the corporate ladder and checked all the boxes society tells us matter. But on the inside, something wasn’t right. He was out of shape and neglecting his health, a fact that came crashing down on him during a vacation when a game of volleyball left him thinking he might need an ambulance.

That was the moment he knew things had to change. For someone who used to be athletic, realizing he was so out of shape hit him hard. And, like many of us, he reached a point where he had to decide: continue on this path or do something about it.

From Corporate Success to Physical Failure

Despite being at the top of his career, Allan was physically burned out. Toxic relationships, excessive drinking, and the convenience of living off hotel bars had taken their toll. It wasn’t just his health that was failing—he admits to losing a part of himself in the process. The wake-up call came when his daughter, a CrossFit coach, asked him to watch her compete. At that moment, he realized he didn’t just want to be a spectator in her life—he wanted to participate.

The Power of Commitment

What sets Allan’s story apart is the commitment he made following that realization. It wasn’t just about shedding pounds. It was about finding a deeper sense of purpose and self-respect. Allan's decision to participate in a Tough Mudder race with his daughter was more than a physical challenge—it symbolized his new commitment to health and family.

After 11 months of dedication, Allan lost 66 pounds of fat, gained 11 pounds of muscle, and finished the race, hand in hand with his daughter. That moment wasn’t just a victory in terms of endurance, but a powerful reconnection with his role as a father and the man he aspired to be.

From Executive to Health Advocate

Allan’s personal transformation didn’t stop there. Inspired by his own journey, he made it his mission to help others over 40 achieve the same. He became a certified personal trainer, focusing on functional aging and fitness nutrition. His goal is to be the coach he wished he had during his struggle. Today, Allan shares his expertise and passion through coaching and his podcast, 40+ Fitness, where he dives into practical health strategies for people who are navigating this crucial stage of life.

Breaking Through Limiting Beliefs

One of the most important lessons from Allan’s story is about mindset. It’s not just about lifting weights or eating right—it’s about overcoming the mental barriers that hold us back. Allan talks about five different mindsets that often limit people’s ability to achieve their health goals:

  • The Windshield: Focusing too much on who you used to be, instead of what you can become.
  • The Copilot: Putting everyone else’s needs before your own, something many parents and caregivers can relate to.
  • The Petals: Giving up too soon because results aren’t immediate.
  • The Tires: Needing momentum to stay motivated but stalling out before that traction kicks in.
  • The Atlas: Needing a big, motivating goal to stay driven.

Allan’s story is proof that persistence pays off and that finding your “why” is crucial to lasting change. Once you commit to a vision for your health, the journey becomes much easier.

The Big Takeaway

Allan’s story isn’t just about physical fitness—it’s about taking control of your life when you feel like you're losing it. Whether you're an overworked executive, a busy parent, or simply someone feeling stuck, his journey offers hope and practical advice for sustainable change. Allan’s experience is a reminder that it’s never too late to prioritize your health and reclaim your life.
