Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS): a promising solution for fish farming

Recirculating Aquaculture System (#RAS) is a fish farming method in a self-contained environment with hybrid nitrification biofilter tanks for ammonia removal and a patented Tubular Denitrification Reactor (TDNR) for nitrate removal. The system is a promising solution for #sustainable #aquaculture. It minimizes water usage and reduces environmental impacts by prolonging water exchange for more than a year, reducing the expression of chemical preparation, leading to disease prevention and improved fish health.

Dr. Sorawit Powtongsook, Director of Integrative Aquaculture Biotechnology Research Group at BIOTEC, explained the functionality of Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS) to Prof. Peter Bossier, Director of the Laboratory of Aquaculture & Artemia Reference Center at Ghent University, Belgium. The picture was taken during Prof. Bossier's visit in August 2022 to explore collaboration on aquaculture with BIOTEC.

BIOTEC developed #RAS for #tilapia in collaboration with Premier Products Public Co., Ltd. and Farm Story Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of P. Charoen Farm. The facility is illustrated at?P. Charoen Farm in Chachoengsao Province, Thailand.?

  • The tank size is 10,000 liter, enabling the production of up to 400 tilapias (culture density is between 35 - 40 kg per cubic meter)
  • Suitable for tilapia and seabass
  • High survival rate of fish cultured in RAS (90 - 100%)?
