“The greatest good you can do for another is not just to share your riches but to reveal to him his own.” – Benjamin Disraeli

Welcome to the latest latest edition, where we're serving up delicious advice on how to enhance your culinary career. This is more than becoming a great chef; it's about becoming an inspirational leader and mentor, understanding the value of emotional intelligence, and fostering staff retention.

Improving Leadership Skills in the Culinary Industry

Leadership is a vital ingredient in any successful kitchen. As chefs, we create mouth-watering dishes, but our influence goes beyond the plate. By honing our leadership skills, we promote a harmonious work environment and contribute to staff retention.

The Power of Mentorship in the Kitchen

Mentorship is a recipe for career advancement. As experienced culinary professionals, we have a responsibility to guide those starting in the industry. By sharing our knowledge, we not only contribute to their career longevity but also strengthen our culinary community as a whole.

Emotional Intelligence: The Secret Sauce for Success

Emotional intelligence is often overlooked in the hustle and bustle of the kitchen, but it's crucial for a healthier work-life balance. It allows us to manage stress, promote self-care, and create a supportive environment where everyone can thrive.

What I'm Watching

I never got any training, or guidance on how to be a good mentor.

I was just blessed to have a few people who saw my potential before I even had a clue, but at that time I wasn't self-aware enough to understand just how they got to me believe in myself when I had mostly doubt.

I can still see the way Ed Jamison would tilt his head to the side with a bemused smile on his face, waiting for me to understand the subtext of his comment, rather than the literal words.

Mark Ciolko had a similar tactic, holding space for me when I raged letting me run out of gas, emotionally without making me wrong or shaming me.

Then, in the quiet moment afterward would ask, "Okay, are ready to get back to work?"

Yes Mark, always.

Kenneth Ortiz on How to be a great mentor.

"Everybody agrees that mentorship is critical to the success of corporate companies and organizations, yet few discuss what should be done to improve their mentorship process. Kenneth Ortiz shares his thoughts and wisdom on what is needed to develop successful mentor relationships to raise up the next level of leaders around us."

What I'm Listening To

No Hesitations Hospitality Leadership Podcast

Christin Marvin invited me on her podcast recently.

She and I were planning on recording an episode on job satisfaction in the hospitality industry and then, as we do, we got into a deep conversation about our successes and challenges as entrepreneurs and said, fuck it, let’s hit the record button.?

What followed was a frank and vulnerable conversation about filling the whole that remains after leaving a life and a lifestyle for the promise of something better.
