It's been a while since I shared my perspectives here. And it so happened during one of my discussions with my interns here, I recently stumbled upon a "recipe" that left a profound impact on me, and I am feeling compelled to share it here. It's a recipe not for a delicious meal, but for something far less appetizing - personal or professional stagnation. The ingredients and instructions struck a chord because, at times, I've found myself following this exact recipe at times, which probably happens to the best of us as well. And so, here's my take on it, with a sprinkle of personal reflection:
- 1 cup of natural talent
- 2 cups of potential opportunities
- 3 tablespoons of complacency
- A pinch of procrastination
- A dash of fear of failure
- A sprinkle of self-doubt
- Optional: external distractions (to taste)
- Start with Natural Talent: I've always known that I have certain skills and abilities. These are my foundation, rich and full of potential. However, recognizing them isn't enough.
- Add Potential Opportunities: Opportunities are everywhere. New projects, career advancements, and personal development courses present themselves. But seeing these opportunities and acting on them are two different things.
- Mix in Complacency: Gently stirring in a generous amount of complacency often keeps us within our comfort zone, avoiding the push needed to explore new boundaries.
- Blend with Procrastination: Adding procrastination, little by little, delays actions that could lead to growth. It’s the "I’ll start tomorrow" mentality that we know all too well.
- Season with Fear of Failure: The fear of failure adds a sharp taste, discouraging some of us from taking risks and trying new things. It’s the fear that if we step out, we might fall.
- Sprinkle Self-Doubt: A light dusting of self-doubt keeps confidence levels low. It’s that inner voice questioning if I'm truly capable.
- Optional: External Distractions: For extra flavour, introduce external distractions. Social media, endless scrolling, binge-watching. Well, these have been our escape routes, diverting attention from meaningful work.
- Let it Simmer: Letting this mixture simmer in the pot of daily routine makes stagnation more ingrained. The longer it sits, the harder it becomes to change.
- Serve Cold: Serving this dish cold represents missed warmth and passion for growth and development. It's the result of not acting on the opportunities presented.
This recipe resonates with me because it’s a reflection of moments in my life when I’ve sometimes let potential slip away. But recognizing this pattern is the first step towards breaking it.
Here’s been my commitment to myself every time I've felt this way, and perhaps it will resonate with some of you too:
- Effort: Putting in the effort every day, even when it feels challenging.
- Courage: Taking risks, no matter how small, to step out of my comfort zone.
- Perseverance: Continuing to push forward, even when faced with setbacks.
Breaking this recipe creates one that leads to growth, fulfilment, and success. This is where I believe in the adage that I've derived from my motorcycling experiences - "You go where you look!"
So, what’s your recipe for success?
